Porta Nigra by ultchuk
In 180 AD, the Romans built a four mile long wall around the city which had five gates which were each about a hundred feet high and made of sandstone blocks. In the Middle Ages two churches were built into the gate but they were torn down between 1804-1819.The north gate or Porta Nigra (Black Gate), some 100 feet high and 120 feet wide, still exists and is a major tourist attraction in Trier.
