Youth Hostel Altenberg: No place for a diet!
The hostel lies a bit outside of Altenberg (1km) in the forests. Rooms are quite nice with a wooden bench. Blankets are old, as well as the beds. But they are quite comfortable. I stayed in a six bedded room with my girlfirends, which was quite a laugh most of the times...
Showers has been renovated recently and the Sauna was a must for us. Afterwards we took baths in the snow...:)
Unique Quality: What definately was the best at this hostel was the food. For dinner the owners always offered something warm again, like sausages, or noodles etc. which was really nice after a sporty day. Many salads were offered too. No place to diet!!!

Hotel Friedrichshöhe
This hotel is a gem, located in a village far from major roads and surrounded by vast forests at an elevation of 750 m. It was built 1910 and renovated in 1996. The hotel offers the charm of a rustic mountain hotel in combination with excellent service. The rooms have good 3star standard, the hotel provides an indoor pool, sauna, tukish steam.
The staff is very helpful and friendly, in the restaurant they serve a huge breakfast and very good local food for lunch and dinner.
Watch out for deals on their website - 3 nights incl. half board for 139 Euro e.g.
A few km cross-country tracks are groomed in the surroundings, accessible right vis-a-vis from the hotel. A frequent bus service links the hotel with Dresden and Altenberg.
The famous bob-and sled-run is located a 20-minutes walk from the hotel.

Hotel Wettin
This is another charming hotel in the hamlet Neuhermsdorf. To be honest, I like it more than the Landhotel Altes Zollhaus. It is more familiar, smaller and IMO more charming.
The rooms have good 3star standard, are clean and quite large. I particularly like the 2 restaurants in this hotel - food is very good, the walls are decorated with wooden panels - very beautiful. Service is very friendly, helpful and attentive.
Watch their deals on the website: two nights incl. half board cost 64 - 68 Euro per person in the double room - a steal.

Hotel Altes Zollhaus
Hotel Altes Zollhaus is an excellent place if you look for a quiet, charming accommodation centrally located for cross-country skiing. It is situated in a hamlet called Neuhermsdorf, at an elevation of 800 m (and thus quite snow reliable) about 10 km west of Altenberg. Bus service relatively frequently from/to Altenberg (almost every hour).
The house was first mentioned 1658 as a toll station on the road from Saxony to Czech. You still find rooms with old vaults from that time.
The rooms are good 3star standard, spacious, clean.
You can eat in two restaurants, a cafe and a "cheese-cellar" for fondue and raclette.
The hotel also provides sauna, jacuzzi, small gym and solarium. Bike/Ski rental is offered (charge) too. A large garden (summer) is excellent for relaxing.
Ask for special deals, I paid only 35 Euro incl. breakfast and dinner in March (stayed 3 nights).

Waldhotel Stephanshöhe
In winter 2004/05 I stayed with friends at this hotel. It was a last-minute decision, because snow was perfect and we all had some vacation days left from the previous year which had to be taken till end March. There was a special deal on the Deutsche Bahn website for this hotel, which sounded great: 99 Euro per person for 4 nights incl. half board.
The hotel building is an large block with 222 rooms, which absolutely doesn't fit into the cute small village Schellerhau. However, the rooms were nice (twin beds, cable TV, tel, large bathroom) and clean. I did not like the ambience - modern, cold, ugly colours. The restaurant was another too big hall and lacked every bit of charm. They served breakast in buffet style (ok) and dinner in buffet style too - partly mediocre (at least for me).
What I liked were the indoor pool (separate building), the internet access, the sufficient public bus service and the nearby starting point of groomed cross-country tracks.
All in all, I would not stay there again. There are plenty of cosy, charming hotels/inns in the region. No need to stay in such a relict of East German architecture.
