Travel Tips for Chemnitz
Swimming and Sauna in Stadtbad
by King_Golo
Chemnitz has numerous indoor swimming pools, but the most beautiful is definitely Stadtbad. Built in the Bauhaus style from 1928 to 1935, Stadtbad has preserved several of these architectural features. Swimming is possible in a 50m pool and a 25m pool, the latter mostly reserved for special occasions such as "swimming for elderly people" or "swimming for pregnants".
Stadtbad also features a very nice sauna with several differently tempered rooms ranging from a 40°C steam sauna to a 95°C Finnish sauna.
All in all the best place to go swimming when you are in the mood! Swimming equipment, what else?!? Be aware that sauna means naked - no clothes are needed, only a towel.
Schillingsche Figuren - The Four Times of the Day
by King_Golo
As mentioned in my "Look out for art" tip, the "Four Times of the Day" are one particularly beautiful group of statues. Mistaken often for the four seasons, these statues symbolize the four times of the day, i.e. morning, noon, evening and night. Female figures depict different scenes taking place during the specific time of the day.
The statues were built from 1863 to 1868 by Johannes Schilling and were originally made to be put up in Dresden. After some time there, they suffered considerably due to the damp air rising from river Elbe. They were then donated to Chemnitz.
