The Chemnitz Schauspielhaus (i.e. the theater) and the Chemnitz Opernhaus (i.e. the opera) stage plays almost every night (except during the summer holidays). Most of them are really good. Although I'm not much of an opera buff, I nevertheless have to recommend the opera: It's got an A orchestra, i.e. 100+ musicians! Both Schauspielhaus and Opernhaus host other cultural events as well: concerts, literary readings, live music discotheque and much more.
After the show, you can check out the Exil, which is a nice bar at the rear side of the Schauspielhaus. Most of the actors will gather there for a beer or two after the play.
