Delitzsch: A Surprise On The Outskirts Of Leipzig

by Kathrin_E

Looking for an affordable last minute accommodation during the Leipzig book fair, all I got was a hotel in the small town of Delitzsch North of Leipzig.
I didn't know much (read: nothing) about the town and arrived without expectations. But I discovered - a hidden gem, maybe not spectacular but worth a closer look if you happen to be in the area.

Disclaimer... It was early March and the weather was rather lousy, so the general appearance of the town in my photos may seem gloomier than it is in reality.

How to pronounce the name of this little town? Try something like "Deh-litsh". This "tzsch" combination is a Saxon speciality.

.

"The Baroque Palace"

The small palace belonged to the Duchy of Sachsen-Merseburg and was inhabitated by two widowed duchesses in the late 17th and 18th century. It contains a museum that includes the duchesses' apartment and some exhibitions on the history of the town.

"The perfect place to stay for fairs in Leipzig"

Delitzsch proved to be the perfect base for the fair in Leipzig. Train connections are grand, direct local trains from Delitzsch to the station at the fairgrounds (Leipzig Neue Messe) take 11 minutes. The fair is faster to reach from Delitzsch than from Leipzig center.

Highly recommended to anyone who wants to visit the Messe, even without a car, and wants to avoid the sky-high prices of the hotels in downtown Leipzig.
