DRESDEN DAY TRIP

by packtarl

We will be visiting Dresden on a day trip from Prague at the end of November. We will be arriving by train. What is the best method of getting into the centre from the railway station? We don't mind walking unless its absolutely miles but we would rather use public transport rather than taxis if we can't walk, so which buses/trams do we want? We will have about 5 hours in Dresden so what should we see? Not too bothered about churches etc. but would like to see some culture and monuments. Just a general tour round really. Is it nice on the riverbank? Also we want a few beers and a meal so any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks.

I'm doing the same thing! I have a day in Dresden in early December. If you're there after 26/11 you can always go to the xmas market. Not sure about transport as I'm still researching that myself.

Good luck!

You should arrive at the Hauptbahnhof (central train station), which is in the centre of Dresden, not far from the shopping areas and the old town.

The 575th Striezelmarkt (Christmas market) starts on the 26th November, so if you want some culture, that should be an interesting stop. It's at the Altmarkt, also quite close to the Hauptbahnhof. Map here: http://www.striezel-markt.de/striezel/html/body_plan.html

With no more than five hours you have to limit yourselves to the city centre and maybe a quick walk across the river over to the Neustadt side for the panorama. The sights of the old town are more than enough to fill several days so you will have to select what you want to see. No time for any of the attractions on the outskirts and in the suburbs. No time for more than one museum, if any at all. With the Christmas market, the schedule becomes even tighter.
Check out some of the members' travel pages about Dresden here on VT for tips.

The best method of getting to the centre from the station is walking, it's 10 minutes to Altmarkt and 15-20 minutes to Schloss and Frauenkirche along Prager Straße pedestrian mall. You could take the tram but that would not save much time. The centre itself is well walkable.

I'd grab a quick bite at the Christmas market or from a bakery instead of wasting one or more of your precious five hours at a restaurant.

Two must see places in downtown Dresden are the Zwinger Palace including the art gallery there (Sistine Madonna is located there) and the other place would be the Grunes Gewolbe (Green Vault) treasure chamber.

That and a bit of wandering around the Bruhsche Terrasse, the Semper Opera House, etc. and your 5 hour stay will be done.

Historisches Grünes Gewölbe/Historical Green Vault requires prebooking tickets several weeks, if not months in advance depending on season, and Advent is peak season. You'd need heaps of good luck to get hold of a ticket for late Novenber now, and you won't arrive early enough in the morning to stand in line for the tickets that go on sale that day. Forget it.

I'd rather suggest a guided tour of the opera house.
The climb one of the towers for the view. There are five options in the old town: Hausmannsturm (the tower of the palace, my no. 1 recommendation), Frauenkirche dome (great but expensive), steeple of Hofkirche/cathedral, steeple of Kreuzkirche in Altmarkt next to the Christmas market, the tower of the city hall (rather far away from the river and the important buildings).
Walk the roofs of the Zwinger.
Walk Brühlsche Terrasse along the river and cross the bridge to the Neustadt side, enjoy the view of the river bank, a walk of Neustadt if you still have time left (probably not).

Travel Tips for Dresden

Lack of hotel rooms

by GuntherHK

Book your accomodaton well in advance.
Dresden is nowadays (03/2007) the most growing economical area in whole Germany and the hotel are in 100% use.
You might meet problems if you try to book your hotel in the nick of time.

Furstenzug

by bugulma

Furstenzug is wall of Stallhof, 102 meters long, that shows all 35 Dukes and Kings of Saxony. The figures from the pasteboard were made in 1868 by painter Wilhelm Walter. In 1904-1907 25.000 pieces of Saxon porcelain were attached to the wall and now we can enjoy it.

LOSCHWITZ: Herrmann-Memorial, aka "Mustard Can"

by Kathrin_E

The little round building, called "Senfbüchse" ("mustard can") by locals, can be found in Loschwitz, a few steps from Körnerplatz. It was erected by the sculptor Joseph Herrmann as a memorial to his father, also named Joseph, who saved the lives of two shipwrecked people from the ice on the Elbe. Look in, the monument is open.

The relief inside depicts the heroic scene in a dramatic picture. The inscription underneath tells the story:

To Joseph Herrmann, the philanthropist,
who risked his own life
during the horrible ice flood of the Elbe
on 24th February 1799
to save the lives of two skippers from Prossen,
his son Joseph Herrmann dedicates
this memorial that was carried out and erected
after his own design
in the year 1869.

Semperoper or Semper Opera House

by richiecdisc about Semperoper or Semper Opera House

This impressive opera house has a long standing tradition for premiering great works and remains a big draw for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Check their website for current offerings and pricing. I was surprised that there were some very affordable tickets for certain shows. Not sure how easy it is to get tickets but worth a try if interested. For those not so inclined but who want to see its ornate interior, tours are available daily though their times depend on show times of the operas. I certainly didn't have the right thing to wear for an evening performance but casual wear is fine for the tour.

Have a Single Malt after dinner

by christine.j about Schwarze Seele

Our apartment was above this restaurant and people staying there get 10% off the bill.Their non-smokers' room is not very large, just six tables, but on nice days/evenings you can sit outside as well. The chef there has a co-operation with a local farm run by handicapped people and they only buy their provisions there. In the menu it says that this is the reason dishes are sometimes out, as they depend on this farm. It's an organic farm, so I was able to eat the meat We ate there three times, twice we had the pork chops. Very good, but the size differed a lot and it was easy to see that it hadn't been cut by professional butchers. I didn't mind, taste is more important than an exact size. They also had a very good pumpkin soup.

Surprisingly for such a small restaurant they have one of the largest selections of Scottish Single Malts I have ever seen outside Scotland, at very reasonable prices.
