Dresden to Zurich

by zweisvet

Hi!

I would like to go from dresden to zurich. Apparently there is a city nightline train that connects the two cities. How is it to travel? and what is the cost like if one is NOT a EURAIL pass holder?

Thanks a tonne!

will give you train times for traisn across Europe, and fares for journeys originating in Germany.

Eurail is an agency, not a rail company. Point-to-point fares are often much cheaper in total than buying a pass. The Eurail pass is not the budget option it once was.

The 22:46 train on Monday, arriving at 12:00 with one change, will cost you 125.40 one-way. There are other time options.

If you book early enough you can get specials starting from 43 Euro. The CNL will take you to Basel during the night, so you can get some sleep, then change for the train to Zürich. Check out the link Leics gave you.

Avoid the sleeper seats. They are like those in planes and quite uncomfortable. Check online specials for early bookers. You can get fares as low as 39 or 49 Euro one way. It's a good option if you *can* sleep on trains. Otherwise it's a loooong ride. A flight might be another good option. There are frequent direct flights from Dresden to Zurich for about 99 Euro.

Travel Tips for Dresden

The 'Altstadt' of the "Florence on the Elbe"

by Pavlik_NL

Walk through the 'Altstadt' (Old town). Along the riverbanks of the Elbe-river, there are many monumental buildings like the 'Statliche Akademia', Palaces from former Sachsian kings, Dom-church, Opera and the Zwinger-palacecomplex. Underground are the mysterious 'Grüne Gewölbe' (Green Catacombs). The innercity is - despite the enormous fires after the WW II-bombing - magnificently restored. NOt so much during Sovjet times, but in an amazing tempo after the Iron Curtain fell. Kathrin, my 'East German' girlfriend that I met in Hungary. Now she lives somewhat closer, near Frankfurt am Main in the Taunus.

Where are the great times of DDR gone...

by globetrott

I saw this gentleman in the street parallell to Pragerstrasse, when-ever I came to Dresden, he is friendly and knows a lot of history, although he also has a certain tendency to forget some important parts of German history. Some people in Saxony and the rest of the former DDR are still dreaming of the good old times of the Communist DDR...
This last "fan of DDR" knew a lot about history, including Austria and was quite charming, and not really wrong in every aspect...
...Still I think it is great the old times are over, and even when not yet everything is totally perfect, it certainly is better for most of the population today anyway.
And these people should also start to think about their own comrades of the former communiste party of DDR - most of them are rich and wealthy today and perfect Capitalists, simply because they found their own tricks to survive in the "bad capitalist system"

a wonderful palace south of Dresden

by globetrott

Schloss Pillnitzis an easy half-daytrip from Dresden, and you may get there best by ship or by your private car. All of the cruise-ships going south will stop in Pillnitz !
This castle with the beautiful park around of it once belonged to countess Anna Konstanze Cosel, one of the many mistresses of August the strong.
She had an interesting life with a sad end :
In 1699 she got divorced of her husband, beeing a minister of Saxony , in order to become the mistress of the king. In 1712 she fell into disgrace and was held as a prisoner in castle Stoplen between 1716 and 1765.
In 1723 August der Starke had the castle of Pillnitz re-constructed in chinese style by the famous architects Pöppelmann and Longuelune.
Schloss Pillnitz is one of the highlights of any cruise on the river Elbe and inside you may see a museum of laque-furniture, musical instruments, clocks, glass and keramics.
Inside the palace and museum you may take photography against a small fee !
Schloss Pillnitz is just 10km south of Dresden !

Down Town

by Antji

Down Town - it´s the name of a comfortable disco!
I love the atmosphere and music inside. I would describe it as studentsflair and that´s what I like! You don´t have to wear too noble clothes because the most guests are students.

Hubertusgarten

by german_eagle

This family run restaurant has been a favourite of mine for many years. I've had meals there with my tennis friends, with American friends and also with the family and never been disappointed.

As you can guess from the name ("Hubertus") their are specialised in game/venison. As fits, their rooms are decorated with deer heads, horns and other hunting stuff. In summer they have a beergarden behind the house in a nice setting. And they also have a bowling alley, often frequented by the locals.

The meals are always freshly prepared and come in big portions. It is hearty local food, nothing fancy. If you're not into wine (granted, their wine list is not particularly exciting) you might opt for a yummy Budweiser, the real Czech beer, not the American stuff. Venison with red cabbage and potatoes or dumplings. It is always yummy.
