need helpful travel info in Dresden
by dexteratl
Hello,
I will be visiting Dresden for 4 days in Aug, and just wondering
1) I read that there are many beautiful buildings/monuments/churches etc in Dresden. Which one has guided tour inside ? What day/time is it ? Is it in English ? Which tour do you highly recommend ?
2) I will be arriving by train. Is there a tourist office there ? is there one in the town area ? How do i find it ?
3) What tram number that runs from Stauffenbergallee/Rudolf-Leonhard-Straße area to the old town (and vice versa) ? How late does it run at night ? Does anyone know of a good link for the tram map ?
4) I heard that the new town is where the fun is at night re cafe/bar/club etc Where exactly is the new town ? What street should I go ?
Thank you.

I can't tell you about English tours, as I went through the various places without a tour guide.
1. Zwinger Palace (including the Old Masters gallery in one of the palace wings);
2. Grünes Gewölbe (the Green Vault) - treasure house of the Dukes of Saxony;
3. Semper Opera House; and
4. Frauenkirche (reconstruction completed in 2005, so I only saw it before and during the reconstruction phases, but have never been inside it)
These would be on the very top of my list of buidings to visit.
Brühlsche Terrasse is an outdoor space on the banks of the Elbe River, which is worth visiting too.

4) Just across the river (there are bridges; everything very walkable).

4) You may want to read this:

You can expect some gentrification on its way, though - just like in Berlin.
Travel Tips for Dresden
Dresdner Stollen
by Kathrin_E
Dresden's most famous pastry is Stollen. The size and shape of a small bread and covered in powdered sugar, it is cut in slices and served with coffee or tea. The dough is heavy and contains raisins, candied lemon peel, and a LOT of butter. Some varieties come with, for example, marzipan fillings.
Stollen is a typical Advent and Christmas food. It is on sale in the shops and bakeries from September. The trick is, however, to leave it in a tin and let it rest till at least late November. Fresh Stollen tastes dry. It has to 'soak' well. Patience!
Besides, Stollen simply belongs to the Christmas season, starting with the first Advent Sunday. Having it earlier is against all tradition.
Top Modern (contemporary) Architecture
by german_eagle
You folks know that every time has its own style of architecture. Since Dresden's city centre was destroyed in WWII you might expect a lot of modern architecture, but surprisingly (or not) there are only a few examples of outstanding new buildings to find in the city. Here are some of them:
- Synagogue
- New Landtag (house of parliament)
- St. Benno school
- Ufa cinema (both the old "round" bulding and the "crystal palace")
- World Trade Centre
- Volkswagen transparent manufacture
- art'otel
- TV tower (closed for reconstruction)
Pegel Dresden: Measuring The Water Level
by Kathrin_E
The box on top of the Theaterkahn next to Augustusbrücke and Theaterplatz shows the current water level of the Elbe, measured in centimetres. 79 cm is quite low. This means problems for ships, including the paddle steamers that were unable to run further upstream than Blaues Wunder in those days.
The only place to get a Radeberger zwickle bier
by richiecdisc about Radeberger Spezial Ausschank
This was one of the nicest and coziest pubs I found in the Old Town of Dresden. It's all wood and a bit upscale but it's worth a splurge. There is a terrace on the roof if the weather is good and some tables out front too. The food sounded pretty expensive but I will admit I was drawn in by the advertising of a "zwickle bier" from Radeberger. This brewery is world renowned for its Pils and I had not heard of a zwickle from them until this day. It's an unfilterd version of the pils that retains a nice yeasty character. Very refreshing on a hot summer's day and worth paying a bit extra for as it's the only place outsde of Radeberg to serve it. The waiters wear black ties and stiff white shirts, but I got away with shorts on the terrace. ;)
Help yourself

There are thousands of restaurants in Dresden and it really depends on what you like to eat.
Still I would like to encourage you to have a little snack or piece of cake or so inbetween - local goodies taste best at the very spot!!! here we had some Meissen delicacy:
the Meissen "Fummel", some sort of cake.
