Luxury in Loschwitz
by Ekaterinburg
Blasewitz goes right up to the banks of the Elbe but despite its des-res villas, across the river is THE most exclusive residential area in Dresden. This is Loscwitz, connected to Blasewitz by the bridge with the colourful title of Das Blaues Wunder ( the Blue Wonder ). A cantilever truss bridge, 147 m long it was regarded as an engineering wonder when it was constructed in 1893. It's probably not regarded as a feat of engineering anymore but it's still blue and driving over it, completely enclosed by the iron gridwork ( photo 2), was quite exciting. Blasewitz has villas but Loschwitz has mansions and castles. High above the banks ofthe river, with terraced vineyards below, these graceful buildings look pretty spectacular on the horizon. Unfortunately, I had only my compact camera with me so you will have to click on the photo to get the smallest idea of what I am describing. Higher up again, reached by a funicular railway and cable car, is the former spa town of Weisser Hirch and here the houses get even more spectacular. We just drove round this circuit but with a commentary from the very knowledgeable guide, it was one of the most enjoyable aspects of our vist to Dresden. One of the Paddle Steamer Cruises will show you all this from the water and next time I come this is something I will look forward to doing.
WEISSER HIRSCH: Protestant Church

different possibilities
by Antji
Dresden has a small airport. Another possibilty is to take the train - ICE ( the fastest kind of train in Germany ) or you can go by car from Berlin on the 'Autobahn' A 13 (like a highway - but you can drive faster:) ) or A 4 from Chemnitz .
I can recommend to use the streetcars. It´s not so expensive and you can go in the most parts of dresden.
Another way to getting around are the steamers of the river Elbe. You can see a lot of bridges and old castles from the steamer.
A mixture of old and new
by Kushelkitten
Its amazing to see how the church has been rebuilt and nears completion. Still cranes stand around it as they finish up the work on the roof but those should be gone shortly. Pieces of the original structure have been reused and can be seen in the black colored sandstone. Most of the structure has been renewed using new stone from the sandstone quaries of Saxon
