The King
Here is the famous monument of King John.
I am taking this picture from under the courtyard tunnel.
I guess it did not turn out that well, but I got a picture of someone taking a picture going into the courtyard. Tourist everywhere!

we're looking for seomthing is inexpensive. 1 star to 2. less than 80 euros per night. I don't care if the bathroom is in the room or out in the hallway. the only thing we care about is that the sleeping quarters are private for only 2 people and that older people (ie-we are in our late 30's) are allowed.
Well, I'm not too familiar with Dresden, but I have heard that Mondpalast Hostel was a nice one.
http://www.mondpalast.de
It's located in Dresden's Neustadt, though, but you know, Neustadt (Neu Town) has the anachronistic distinctiveness of actually being older than Dresden Altstadt (Old Town), as the latter one was bombed into rubble in 1945.
Yes, Mondpalast is recommended in nearly every travel guide and rather famous. But it is in Dresden-Neustadt and not in the newer Altstadt - like some of the other hostels. Having been in Dresden, I would say Neustadt is a fine area to stay, and you can get quickly into the Altstadt centre by tram or bus, and even
Here is a list with more hostels (unfortunately only in German):

When you click on Details you can check the distance to the Altstadt centre (Historische Altstadt).
Many of them are just a 15 to 20 min walk from the centre.
Unfortunately accommodation in Dresden is rather expensive. When we were there last year we found affordable hotel rates on www.wotif.de
However, we did not stay right in the Altstadt centre, there was nothing in the price range you require. But they have really good tram and bus service, so it would not be a problem.
On the tourist website http://www.dresden.de/dwt/de/uebernachtung.php you can also check out pensions and private rooms (Gästezimmer).

What you can also do is to email the tourist information and tell them exactly what you require:

Why Innere Altstadt?
Try these:

(1-room apartments between 55 and 100 Euro depending on season)

(quite basic, but not bad, double room w/bathroom incl. breakfast 74 Euro; room with shower/WC down the hall 56 Euro)
More comfort: www.ibis-dresden.de (click on English, slightly over your budget, but a very good choice)

The Ampelmann, the little man in traffic lights for pedestrians, has more or less become a symbol of the former East's cultural identity after the German reunification. Traffic lights in the East looked different from those in the West. After the reunification, when new traffic lights were installed, authorities used the Western type. People in the former GDR area were offended. The fight for the Eastern Ampelmann was successful.
To be honest, the Eastern Ampelmann with his little hat is indeed much cuter than the simple silhouette on West German traffic lights.
Since we live in times of gender equality, there is not only an Ampelmann but also an Ampelmädchen, a traffic light girl (see photo 4). In Dresden, for example, the girl can be found on the traffic lights at Prager Straße tram stop.
A clever company invented Ampelmann souvenirs which have become quite popular. There are t-shirts, umbrellas, bags, towels with both the man and the girl in red and green. A nice idea for a gift, maybe?
klot of old castles in the surrounding of Dresden. the one we like most is very strange, with the stables for the horses in the fifth floor and the living rooms in the cellar...
Weesenstein castle is just 30 minutes by car or local train away. read more at www.weesenstein.de (english version available). Other tips for travels around Dresden at www.visit-dresden.com
If you will be in Dresden you must go in the NEUSTADT. There you can find a lot of bars, pubs and some discopubs. A lot of young people and students like to spend their nights in this area. You can wear normal clothes like jeans and shirt or it´s better to say like a students dress.
Though this pales in comparison to a great Bavarian beer garden and is perhaps not as authentic as Brauhaus am Waldschlossen just up river, you can’t argue with its scenic setting nor its great prices considering its location. The bench seating could use some shady chestnut trees rather than unnatural umbrella covering but you are looking across the Elbe at the Dresden skyline so one can’t complain. Food is quite good and reasonably priced with many German standbys served in a canteen fashion much like their Bavarian counterparts. In fact, I'd say it is one of the better value places to eat in all of Dresden and the view is about as good as you'll find too. Oh and Radeberger Pils and Kusovice Dark on tap doesn't hurt, even available in one liter mugs!
