Internet cafe at Dresden city centre?
by kira11
Hi everyone,
does anyone know an Internet cafe in the city centre of Dresden (preferably near "Altmarkt")? Or is there a place in this area that has Internet machines (like they often have at railway stations or shopping malls)?
Thank you very much in advance,
Kiki

I would recommend the internet stations in the book store "Haus des Buches" - walk from Altmarkt towards Prager Strasse, it is not to miss. At least you'll notice the "Commerzbank" sign in the same building. The internet stations are on the uppermost floor. I like it very much because it is airconditioned ;-)
Another option is the internet cafe on the northwest corner of the Altmarkt. No personal experience, though.
Travel Tips for Dresden
Saechsische Schweiz
by Antji
Make a trip to the SAECHSISCHE SCHWEIZ (Saxonian Switzerland)or another name is 'Elbsandsteingebirge'. This is an area with mointains and rocks near from Dresden which is very popular and beautiful for hiking, climbing, biking or just enjoy the nature. The special kind of stone is sandstone. Another and more relaxing possibility to enjoy the 'Saechsische Schweiz' is to make a trip with the old paddle-steamers on the river Elbe. You will have a fascinating view! I can recommend to hike to the BASTEI', FESTUNG KOENIGSTEIN,LILIENSTEIN and I am sure that you will find other good aims for hiking!
Packing List

Bring gloves if traveling in winter for those night photo shoots and wear your hat, no matter how stupid it looks. At the Christmas markets we wore long underwear and were glad we did. No amount of gluhwein makes it too warm for long undies! A tripod is essential, there's not always a handy trashcan lid. 800 ASA film is handy though you don't always have it in your camera when you want it there. ;> I found on my most recent trip that a digital camera is much easy to use for night shots though a tripod is still well worth carrying.
LOSCHWITZ: Flood Monument (2006)
by Kathrin_E
This lower part of Loschwitz was heavily affected by the Elbe flood of August 2002 - not for the first time. Floods hit the village in 1799, 1845, 1890, 1940, 1947, 1988. The 2002 flood, however, exceeded all records and prompted the making of this sculpture.
Sculptor Klaus-Dieter Köhler created a stone wave that lifts up and destroys buildings. The inscription says, "Dedicated to those who live with the river". It refers to the close connection the village has to the Elbe, which means both work and living as fishermen and skippers and the constant danger from frequent floodings. In summer 2006 the sculpture was put up in the village square.
Location: Friedrich-Wieck-Straße, between 'mustard can' and Wieck house.
The World’s oldest Paddle Wheel Steamer
by Kakapo2
Dresden prides itself of having the world’s oldest and biggest fleet of paddle wheel steamers. They have nine such historic ships, 80 to 130 years old.
They travel through Dresden’s Elbe Valley which has UNESCO World Heritage status, and get into Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) and to the border of the Czech Republic. Also 90 min city tours, so called Bridge Tours (Brückentour), are on offer.
The steamers travel between Seußlitz in the north-west to the border town Schmilka in the south-east, and pass at Meißen (wonderful town of the royal porcelain manufactory), Dresden, Schloss Pillnitz, Pirna and Bad Schandau.
The stop in Dresden is called Terrassenufer. That is just at Brühlsche Terrasse, below the castle, between Augustusbrücke (Theaterplatz) and Carolabrücke.
To give you an idea about the price of a trip (as Oct. 2008):
Dresden – Meißen costs 11.40 Euro single/16.80 return
Dresden – Schloss Pillnitz 9.60/14.80
Dresden – Bad Schandau 20.50/20.50 (yes, not more)
If you plan to cruise quite a bit and use land transportation as well you should think about purchasing a so-called Kombiticket for 27 Euro (children 16.50/family 43.00). Those tickets can only be purchased at the shipping company’s counter.
They also offer themed cruises at special rates.
On the VVO website you can also find trips on passenger ships that cruise along the vineyards etc.
Fine dining for special occasions
by german_eagle about Landhaus Lockwitzgrund
This restaurant is well known among the locals for excellent dining. Make sure to reserve a table on weekends! On Mother's Day the family and me went there by car w/o reservation and we almost didn't get a table.
The hotel has a charming setting in a green valley in the outskirts of the city. The building from the 19th century was originally a pasta factory. It's beautifully restored and transformed into a small and charming hotel with restaurant.
The staff was very attentive, friendly, quick, not in the slightest snobby. First we got a 'greeting from the kitchen' - home made egg salad with dark bread and butter - delicious. Then we had a green salad with grilled pieces of paprika, filled with ricotta, in a tzatziki sauce. Yummy! The green salad was not just plain lettuce and what you usually get - they had added some really tasty - almost spicey - stuff.
Main course was Argentinian beef steak with pasta (filled with ricotta) and French beans. I had ordered my steak medium and it was perfect. My parents liked their steak well done and it was exactly right for them, too.
We had a red house wine from Sicily (a Salice Salentino) which was excellent.
The bill came to 80 Euro with tip, which was okay I thought. I'd eat there anytime again, preferrably on a weekday when it is a bit quieter.
