We are booked on a Peter Deilmann river cruise in April 29-May 7. Last year the water level was so low on the Elbe that a lot of cruises were cancelled. Will the water level high enough now for this cruise?

It looks pretty good right now, but it is not predictable. There is a lot of snow in the mountains, and since we've had low temperatures since the week before Christmas I don't expect the winter to last long ... I think that in April the snow will melt (at least in the lower regions) and the Elbe will have enough water for the cruise.

It's not a sort of 'third world' and therefore you can find almost everything for this kind of stuff. As usual good rechargable batteries for digicam are not so easy to find; bring the spare pack with you or just go for standard batteries. Money-money-money !! as in the rest of Germany credit cards are not always accepted; use them to withdraw cash from bank outlet.
On the pic you see the Castle Koenigstein and the popular rock Lilienstein. Koenigstein is the name of the castle on the rock and the name of the village too. It´s a must to visit both! Castle Koenigstein is easy for walikng - it´s not so high. But for the rock Lilienstein you need good shoes and should be very because it´s a long and high way for hiking.
Dresden has one of the oldest funiculars in Europe. It was built in 1895 and after some renovations (the latest in the 90s) it is still running!
It operates between Körnerplatz square (Dresden-Loschwitz) and Dresden Weisser Hirsch, both favourite residential areas in the east of Dresden.
Elevation difference is 99 m, length 590 m (of which 140 m in two tunnels). At the upper station you find the well-know restaurant Luisenhof, called "balcony of Dresden", which provides gorgeous panoramic views of the city.
In case you are a fan of old technologies - there is an opportunity to see the old engines at the top station. Ask the staff!
The fare right now is 4 Euro for a round trip. Single far is 3 Euro. If you have a day ticket then you only pay the reduced fare (2.50/2 Euro). Weekly and monthly tickets cover the funicular rides.
I am reluctant to recommend this restaurant for anything else but cake, coffee/tea, dessert. I've had several meals there and main courses were never perfect. Or the service was slow/inattentive. Or something else.
But - the view from the restaurant is not to beat. It is located high up on the hills by the river, in the fancy 19th century residential area Weisser Hirsch. The funicular from Loschwitz (Körnerplatz) ends right next to the Luisenhof. I love to have tea and cake on a sunny day on their terrace (see picture).
The restaurant is open daily. If you intend to visit on a sunny weekend make reservations. I love their cakes/tarts. I was VERY surprised they even offer an "Engadine nut cake". I tried and it was pretty good. However, you'll want to have something more local. The Eierschecke is not bad, but Wippler's is better (just a short funicular ride away). Tea and coffee are very good. For lunch/dinner see above :(
