The Neue Synagogue
by Ekaterinburg
My trip to Dresden was a side-trip from Berlin and in Berlin also I had photographed and visited a 'Neue Synagogue' the day before. I was incredibly moved by both but this one in Dresden could not possibly be more different from its Byzantine looking counterpart in Berlin. Though much in the history of both buildings was similar, the Dresden building is a total departure in terms of architecture and form.
The earlier synagogue built by Gottfried Semper had been burned to the ground on November 9-10, 1938, the dreaded Kristallnacht, when all over Germany buildings belonging to the Jewish people were destroyed. 63 years later, on November 9th, 2001 , this new synagogue was dedicated, close to the site of the original. Just across the street from the Bruhl Gardens and all the stately Baroque buildings in the area, this stands head and shoulders above its surroundings, by virtue of its simplicity and purity of form. It's a cubic structure with no windows, based on the Israelite temples of prayer. It's an amazing building that is completely inscrutable when you stand in front of it. Well, to the side of it because the entrance is firmly locked. Next door is a community centre built in similar style and together they present a blank facade to the passerby. This of course makes a greater statment than any decorative feature could possibly do and you walk away with the memory of past events weighing heavily on your mind.
for all friends of DDR-cars
by globetrott
"Ostmobil" is an excellent collection of old Trabbis and a lot more of the typical cars and motor-scooters used and built in the former DDR.
This collection is shown in the 1st floor (USA:2nd floor) of a shoppinghall, called Neustädter Markthalle, that looks nice already by itself with a great architecture.
BUT my best memory was the great collection of Trabbants / Tarbbis - see my last picture, where I made my own picture-combination :
Lets start on top : "Villa Sachsenruh" on the left is a Trabbi with a tent on the top and it shows the Trabbant from the movie "Go Trabbi go!" - a movie , made shortly after Germany was re-united and it shows such a Trabbi going to Rome.
On the right : Trabbi and Camper LC9, beeing just 220 kg in order to be able to be torn by a Trabby.
On the righ below : The tarbbi of NVA, the army of the DDR
And finally on the left :
Trabbi P60 Pick Up. It was planned that way in 1960 by Dr.W.Lang, the constructor of all Trabbis, but was never built.
In 1999 W.Liebig heared about these plans and built this car according to the original construction-plans.
In the museum you may also see Trabbis used by the post-office of DDR, racing-cars, hundreds of motorscooters, a Duo 4 etc. etc. etc...
Thanks a lot Ingo , for this excellent museum, I would never have been able to find myself !
Ingo is german-eagle on VT and certainly the best expert about Dresden and Saxony on VT !!
View from Papstein in Saxonia Switzerland
by Antji
Papstein is one of the many rocks in Saxonia Switzerland where you can walk to the top. It´s near from the village Papsdorf, Gohrisch and Koenigstein. From the top you have a great view to the popular rocks Barbarine, Pfaffenstein. There are many parkingplaces for starting the hiking tour. I can recommend everybody to make such hiking tour. You will have wonderful views from different rocks or just enjoy the great natur in the woods.

The Dresdener Ausspanne --...
by DesertRat
The Dresdener Ausspanne -- loosely translated: Dresden Relaxation Spot -- was not exactly a favorite. It was, however, one of the few places on Pragerstrasse where you could get a drink and a sandwich. The name was also relatively creative for the East German reality. Since everything was state-owned, there was no need for attractive names. A grocery store would simply be called 'Footstuffs'; a dairy shop was 'Milk Products; a fruit and vegetable shop quite simply that: 'Fruit and Vegetables.'
