wienner schnitzel

by oslocairo

Do you know of a good cheap place to get wienner schnitzel near the center of town? It can be a chain, as long as it is in the center and cheap.

Re: wienner schnitzel

by blackbirdxx

real Wiener Schnitzel is made of veal cutlets (Loin cut)so it cannot be cheap. When it is cheap, it is made of pork, and only, let`s say "Vienna style". It is really hard to find perfect Wiener Schnitzel in Germany.

Thanks!I had it for the first time in Vienna lastyear, but have never been to Germany, so was not sure if I could get it there. Then I will be careful of anything cheap if I see it.

In case you are planning on visiting Berlin, there's are a couple of restaurants that really know how to fix Wiener Schnitzel, which doesn't come as surprise considering their chefs are from Austria. But you're supposed not to dress too casual, which could be a no-no for some people.

Travel Tips for Dresden

Der Grüne Pfeil - the best heritage of DDR

by globetrott

You may often hear people say " Not everything was bad in the old DDR..." and I totally agree, especially when it comes to this special trafic-sign - Grüner Pfeil / (the green arrow)
At Street-crossings where you see such a green arrow next to the traficlight, you may go on , when you intend to turn right, even when the traficlight shows red !!
Of course you have to carefully look not to get into conflict with any other car, but in most of the cases you may go, AND the other cars, especially those behind of you, who want to go to the right as well, expect you to go as quick as possible !!

For a tourist it might need some time, to get accustomed to this clever idea, and after a big discussion the rest of germany tried to get a similar regulation, but so far I never saw this type of green arrow OUTside of the old DDR-area.

State Operetta

by Nemorino

In addition to the Saxon State Opera (Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden) in the Semper Opera House, Dresden also has a State Operetta Theater (Staatsoperette Dresden), the only one of its kind in Germany. It is devoted exclusively to the production of operettas and musicals.

Despite its name, the Staatsoperette is not owned by the State of Sachsen, but by the city of Dresden (thanks to german_eagle for this correction).

Here in their display case in the Weiße Gasse (White Lane) they are advertising their production of the operetta Die Herzogin von Chicago (The Duchess of Chicago), by Emmerich Kálmán, which was first performed in 1928.

Their actual theater is in the Pirnaer Landstraße 131, in a southeast district of Dresden. (I haven't been there yet, but will definitely give them a try the next time I am in town.)

cruising the Elbe between Meissen and Schandau

by globetrott

Cruising the river Elbe is a must, when visiting Dresden, and the most interesting sights in the surroundings of Dresden may be visited easyly by boat. For romantic people and those, beeing interested in old steam-ships I may highly recommend to take the steam-boat in order to explore the most important places along the river Elbe:
Ships will start at Dresden and go down the river to Meissen or up the river, where you may get to places like Schloss Pillnitz - Pirna - Rathen & Elbsandgebirge - Festung Königstein - Bad Schandau and sometimes even further to Hrensko and Decin in Czechia.
While other shipping-companies have maybe 1 or 2 steamships only, the shippingline in Dresden has only a very few other ships, but all of the rest are powered by steam !
Such an excursion from Dresden might take the whole day, but it is well worth it !
Where-ever you go upstream, you may also take back the train in order to save time, or get there by train and get back by ship.

Very good Spanish food

by Leipzig about El Perro Borracho

While the VT Meeting in 2005 Ingo (german_eagle) invited me to this excellent restaurant. You can sit in the inner courtyard and admire the façades of the Kunsthof. Although it is not the cheapest restaurant the fantastic view, the excellent kitchen and the huge selection of wines compensate the higher price. According to their website the restaurant was awarded in 1998 and 2002 as the best in Dresden.
