Visiting Meissen
by silversiegfried
I would be grateful for any information about visiting Meissen from Dresden by rail (and ensuring we get back to dresden for curtain up at the opera house. Do we get rail tickets from Neustadt Hautbahnhof (and can one buy tickets online)?

RE: Visiting Meissen

Dresden and Meissen are both inside the VVO, the local public transport network of the Dresden area.
http://www.vvo-online.de/download/liniennetz_spnv.pdf
For two persons (I assume) a one day family will be the best deal. EUR 14,00.
You can buy it from any ticket machine in Dresden. The ticket is valid till 4am of the day following ticket validation.
http://www.vvo-online.de/en/index.aspx
This ticket covers also the buses in Meissen.

for the timetable you can use:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Dresden
To: Meissen (keep the default of the drop-down box, don't select anything out of the list)

Down on the Elbe at sunset in the summer....
by richiecdisc
The Elbe River is notorious for flooding especially in light of what happened in 2002, but one good thing that comes of this is no one builds anything on its shores. This leads to a big grassy area adjacent to it that locals take full advantage of. It's typical on a warm afternoon, to walk along it, or bring a picnic or something to drink. Why pay an inflated river side price for a beer when you can bring some down and drink at a fraction of the price, or just wander around and soak in the atmosphere of the sun's waning rays.
Schloss Weesenstein
by richiecdisc
Doreen's father told us there was a brewpub in this picturesque castle on my first visit. I'm not sure if he was pulling our leg or what, but even though there was no beer here, it was a magnificent sight. This historic castle was built some 700 years ago though there have been numerous additions from various time periods so you have a melding of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical features. Built on an important trade road between Meissen and Bohemia, the castle has a distinctive Bohemian influence and my first impression of it was that it looked "Czech." The gardens surrounding the castle are justifiably popular. On my visit in 2003, I saw the effects of the mass flooding that ravaged the area the previous summer. Let's hope it can be restored to its former glory soon.
I am happy to say that all the ill effects of the flooding have been rectified and Weesenstein is very in its full glory. As it turns out the brewery that we could not find that first day does in fact exist. I was lucky to have my wedding reception in the castle's brewery in 2006 and now it is a stop every year when we go back...to relive the day and oh, have a beer too! :)
Tram
by el_ruso
The main mode of public transport is the train, most of them being remodeled Czech Tatras. All trains are painted in the city's color, yellow and black.
You can take 6,8 or 9, and in 8 minutes you can reach Palace Square from the main train station. There is info on routes available at the information booth located inside the Zwinger.
fine dining at Bruehlsche Terrasse
by globetrott about Wettiner Keller
Wettiner Keller was my favorite cafe at Bruehlsche terrasse, maybe simply because of that great building you may see on my picture, but once that you have some icecream on a hot summerday there, you might return for more again and again.
Brühlsche Terrasse in Dresden is the wide boulevard high above the river Elbe, where deep below all of the steamships are docked.
This boulevard starts next to the Schloß and ends at the Academy . It is maybe 12 meters wide and includes trees, benches and garden-cafes and -restaurants.
Wettiner Keller is open:
Tue-Sat : 06.00p.m. till midnight It was a hot summerday in july 2004 and I had a delicious icecream-cup with fruits and liquor.
This garden-restaurant is part of the Dresden-Hilton and a really nice place to relax !
NO need to dress up formally !!
