Cathedral (Hofkirche)
by bugulma
August I, the Duke of Saxony, was the Polish king as well. As you know Polish are catholic. So, Hofkirche was built for the king it seems. The building works lasted in 1738-1754 by Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri. On the roof there are 78 figures. The church was destroyed in 1945. In 1980 it was rebuilt and became cathedral.
Wonderful hiking!

That is what I most like around Dresden. Usually the first place I take all my friends to is Bastei and it really worths visiting. One can take a S-bahn till Kurort Rathen and then use Ferry boat to get on the opposite side of the Elba. The views from the top are great and the narrow path between cliffs is beautiful.
Koenigstein is usually the next one for my friends. The old fortress on the top of mount.
But my favorits are areas called Schrammstein and Affenstein. Walking on the top of cliffs is amazing!
Sächsische Schweiz

it is not really off the beaten path, but the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxonian Switzerland) is a little outside of Dresden.
Take the tram to Rathen and then follow all the tourists who want to see this beautiful place!

The Dresden airport is rather small, but very new modern buildings make you feel comfortable.
Taking a taxi to town will cost you approximately 13-18 EURO. Taking the S-Bahn to the stations (see Dresden by rail) is fast and cheaper:
The S-Bahn station is on the lower level of the new terminal building. It takes you 13 minutes to travel from Dresden-Neustadt station, and about 22 minutes from Dresden Hauptbahnhof. A single ticket for the tariff zone Dresden is EUR 1.50 (valid on S-Bahn, tram and bus).
There are two big railway stations: The Neustädter Bahnhof is situated right of the river Elbe (recommended for all destinations on that side of the town, e.g. Neustadt, Weißer Hirsch) and the main station (Hauptbahnhof) on the left side of the Elbe (fine if you stay in the historic center or the hotels at the Prager Straße)
By car coming from
- from Cologne / Frankfurt via Eisenach take the motorway (Autobahn) A4
- from Münster / Osnabrück or Hannover via Magdeburg / Leipzig (A 14)
- from Hamburg via Berlin and the A 13
- from Munich / Nürnberg via Chemnitz (A 72/A4)
The hotels have a guiding system (a single letter and the name of the hotel on green signs) - ask your hotel for the correct route!
On www.visit-dresden.com/estverke.html you'll find links with schedules of planes, trains, busses...!
Within the city: walk! It's not *that* big...
or go by bus/tram (operated by the DVB) - reasonable prices, especially with a 24-hour-ticket (just jump on and off...)
Zwinger - the fairytale turned into stone.

It is a miracle of baroque architecture, it was burnt to its foundations but was reconstructed and opened again. It could also be called "The place of sighs" because everyone who enters the place, just sighs due to all the strong impressions...
