Getting around

by ATLC

We are probably basing ourselves in Pirna and we have a car.

When we go to Dresden, what are the best options?
- train? (I think there is an S-bahn, yes?)
- car? (if so, what would be the best place to park? and what would the cost be?)

Lines S1 & S2 of the Dresdner S-Bahn go from Pirna to various stations in Dresden, including Hauptbahnhof, Mitte and Neustadt. The journey to the Hauptbahnhof takes 23 min., which is less than what would take you if you drived under normal traffic conditions. If you prefer to drive, there are several Parkhäuser in the Altstadt where you can leave your car for a fee between € 1.50 and € 2.- per hour. The largest ones are located near the Neumarkt/Frauenkirche. That is a shorter walking distance to the main attractions than from any of the city stations. They can get quite busy on Saturday afternoons, though.

Thank you, unai.
The parking fee doesn't seem too high. But public transportation is probably easiest. Would we get a day card that is also valid in Dresden?

Re: Getting around

Yes, there are, according to the Dresden Transport website:

Thanks again. (I do speak/read German :-)

In case you plan to visit the attractions that are located in the city centre of Dresden then definitely use public transportation. With the tickets of the VVO public transportation network you can use S-Bahn, regional trains, buses and ferries that cross the river (not the steamers and other boats of the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt GmbH).

Get a family day ticket (Familientageskarte) for the two zones Pirna and Dresden (or, if you want to go further like Radebeul or Meißen get one for the whole VVO region). This ticket is good for two adults and up to four kids.

Car is not recommended for the city centre as there are always road works and traffic jams.

Schloss Egberg

You can find this castle in dresden. you will see it from the other side of the river Elbe. But the view from this castle to the elb is very beautiful too because it´s on a hill.
There is a nice restaurant too.

Filmnächte am Elbufer

by Leipzig

You like good movies but dislike the sticky atmosphere in cinemas? Then you should go to "Filmnächte am Elbufer" (Movie nights at Elbe banks). But the event does not only offer the newst movies but also life acts. Party together with over 100,000 crazy people or watch with your honey the newest movies.

breakfast to die for

by call_me_rhia about zum goldenen ring

Zum goldenen Ring (to the gold ring) is a nice place to have breakfast the coffee was particularly nice. However it's not a breakfast place, but I did not have enough time to go back there for dinner The menu, from what I could see, seemed delicious - and very German: schnitzel, sausages... lots of typical dishes! Next time...
