For recreation after some exhausting sightseeing - here is a list of the most beautiful gardens/parks in Dresden and surrounding:

a little beautiful chateau a bit outside of Dresden next to the Elbe. I´ve been in Dresden last june (2002), so before the terrible high tide for the whole region around. But on one wall of the chateau next to the river are marks that show the highest levels of water through the centuries. Unfortunately I believe they reached a new high score last year or at least one of the hightest. And these marks are up the wall to the second flor of the building.....
The transportation museum is located in a beautiful building called Johanneum right on the Neumarkt square. It was originally built 1586-89 after plans of Italian architect Giovanni Maria Nosseni. It was redesigned 1729-31 and 1745-46 in Baroque style by Knöffel. Originally it was used as the Royal stables, later it was home of the picture gallery.
The transportation museum shows a huge and interesting collection. A good idea for a visit with children.
Dresden can easily be reached on the autobahns A4 (from Frankfurt/Main, Cologne,Leipzig) and the A13 (from Berlin and Rostock)
The city also has two major railway stations with ICE, EC and IC services.
The international airport is just 9km to the north of the city centre. Shuttle service operates frequently.
Amazing to think that some of the stones that make up the Frauenkirche were originally documented and logged by location, so when the reconstruction and renovation took place, some of the original stones were placed in the original location on the facade.
The 'new' Frauenkirche is stunning and worth seeing.
