i'm visiting Leipzig for a weekend in December, using the ryanair route to Altenburg. Could anyone please recommend a good 3-4* hotel in the Altenburg area that is close to a train line to Leipzig so we can go in see the Christmas market.
The only 4* hotel in Altenburg I found is this:

A one-way train ticket from Altenburg to Leipzig costs € 6.60. The ride usually takes 40min. You arrive at Leipzig mainstation. Leave station towards "Willy-Brandt-Platz" and cross the square. To the left you see a modern building with a yellow "i" on its roof. That's the tourist information.
Or go through the passage and follow the road "Nikolaistrasse" - then you see the Christmas Market.

Actually, you don't really need a map in Leipzig. We managed to burn our map (don't ask how it happened), and did not have any problems even after that accident. The center of the city is quite small and there are some tall buildings you can use for finding the place you are going.
The Gewandhaus is a modern concert house on Augustusplatz. The main foyer is dominated by Europe's largest ceiling painting. The Great Hall offers seats for 1,900 persons and is dominated by a giant organ with over 6,600 pipes. The Mendelssohn-Hall offers around 500 seats and is also used for congresses.

Originally we were interested in a wine tasting and I called Gourmetage one day in advance to make an arrangement. They agreed and said they would put some excellent local white wine in the cooler for us.
As it turned out we were there around noon time - and we were hungry. Since they also have a great selection of meat, salami, cheese etc. we ordered a platter with a selection of those. While they cut and prepared the platter we had the wine tasting at their bar - very competent staff, the wine pretty good. When the lunch platters arrived (beautifully arranged, with a variety of bread) we opted for a bottle of a cuvee of Dornfelder, Regent and one other grape (Proschwitz winery) to have with the food. Absolutely delicious! If I recall correctly the check was about 60 Euro for two (all the wine included, ).
It is not a surprise that this lovely Renaissanse building from 1557 is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. It is situated on the city's main squre, around where you can always see many people either checking out the market, walking, talking or just sitting.
Right next to St. Thomas church you find a Baroque house, called Bosehaus, which is home of the Bach Museum and Archive.
The house was built 1711 by the Bose family, close friends of Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1985 a museum about Bach, his life and works was opened. In the Summer Hall (backyard wing, 1st floor) from time to time concerts are given in nice ambience.

A: "Leipzig is a big station, so they will have that for sure. Normally these boxes will take money for the first 24 hours and when you have them there for 48 hours you have..."
