Getting there
by magictravelers
We have a chance to go to Leipzig on the weekend of March 27-28, comming from Barcelona.
We are trying to get a ccheap plane rate (such as Ryanair), but are not able to find anything.
Any suggestions?
How expensive and how long from Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt (cities whereRyanair does travel to feom Barcelona)
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.
Thanks and keep traveling!

RE: Getting there
by abalada
To my knowledge Ryanair flies from Girona (Barcelona) only to Weeze (German/Dutch border), Hahn (closer to the German/Luxembourg border than to Frankfurt), Baden-Baden/Karlsruhe (German/French border).
I guess this are exactly the 3 airports in Germany most distant from Leipzig.
Ryanair is flying from London-Stansted to Altenberg (AOC). Bus shuttle service to Leipzig (1:15). Ryanair also flies from London-Stansted to Berlin-Schönefeld.
DB timetable

From: SXF (for Berlin-Schönefeld Airport train station)
To: L (for Leipzig Hbf)
Travel time is from 1:18 to 2:23.
Air Berlin flies from Barcelona (BCN) to Leipzig (LEJ).

Travel Tips for Leipzig
Leipzig Christmas Market
by Leipzig
Leipzig Christmas Market is one of world's oldest and largest. It attracts with live music, choirs, orchestras and of course the real Santa Claus! The scent of gingerbread, cinnamon, sweet roasted almonds and mulled red wine is always in the air. World's biggest Advent-calendar (857 square meters), an iceskating course and hundreds of individual market stalls sell you traditional crafts, food and Gluehwein (spiced red wine).
Another empty building
by Nemorino
I hope I'm not being too unfair to the city of Leipzig by posting pictures of derelict buildings -- this is the last one, I promise.
This particular building is located right at the tram stop Straßenbahnhof Angerbrücke, which is where you would get off to go see a musical or operetta at Haus Dreilinden. It must have been a beautiful building in its day, and may well be again if anyone ever gets around to restoring it.
There is a lot of construction work going on in this neighborhood, for instance they are renovating and modernizing the tram depot which is right across the street from here.
More Coffee
by IceBear7 about Cafe Riquet-Haus
Another great old-fashioned coffee house in downtown Leipzig. Extremely beautiful outside with the famous elephants at the entrance and two floors of cosy tables inside.
Sometimes they have cabaret shows on the first floor.
Staff could be friendlier but the coffee was great.
Take a look into the courtyards and passages
by King_Golo
This is something you should definitely do - although it must be said that it is hardly to be overlooked anyway! Leipzig's centre is full of wonderful passages and courtyards telling you a lot about the city's history. It would be too much to tell you about every single passage, but two of them must be mentioned:
*Mädler Passage with the famous "Auerbach's Keller", the bar which Goethe's Faust visits with Mephisto. Don't forget to rub the shoe of one of the statues next to the entrance - it is supposed to bring luck! "Which statue?" you may ask - but this is not really a difficult question. Just look which shoe hasn't preserved its original colours!
*Specks Hof: As german_eagle puts it, "Speck's Hof is one of those excellent passages in Leipzig's centre, which make you want to stroll, watch and buy..." Hardly any additions necessary! It's one of the most magnificent passages, decorated richly in art nouveau style. Interesting shops and pleasant cafes make it my favourite passage in Leipzig.
My tip would be to just enter every passage you come across. I promise you won't be disappointed!
A giant leap...
by King_Golo
In front of the "Zeitgenössische Forum", a museum in central Leipzig, you'll find the interesting statue called "Der Jahrhundertschritt". It is a bronze (?) statue of a man making a giant leap and is meant to symbolize the overcoming of the worst dictatorships Eastern Germany suffered from (i.e. the Nazi era and the Socialist era). In the museum, you can find many more interesting facts about the GDR times.
Questions and Answers
Q: Train Station Luggage Store "Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a place to store luggage in the station for upto 48 hours?
Thanks"
A: "Leipzig is a big station, so they will have that for sure.
Normally these boxes will take money for the first 24 hours and when you have them there for 48 hours you have..."
