More luck
by King_Golo
At the entrance to Auerbach's Keller, a restaurant made famous by a scene of Goethe's "Faust" playing there, you can find several statues. They show the above-mentioned scene: Mephisto playing a trick at some students with Faust at his side. Faust however doesn't enjoy this kind of fun and states dryly: "Ich hätte Lust, nun abzufahren" (I'd rather leave now).
In case you need luck, touch the already polished foot of one of the statues. This is supposed to bring luck, similar to the angel in Pilsen and the tortoises in Hanoi. Apparently, literally everybody does it and every tourist takes a picture of his friend rubbing the foot, so be prepared for waiting a moment.
Haus Dreilinden
by Nemorino
This traditional theater in the Lindenau district now belongs to the Leipzig Opera and is their venue for musicals, operettas and light operas.
After the destruction of the old Leipzig Opera House (which confusingly enough was known as the New Theater), the Haus Dreilinden had to serve as the main opera venue from 1944 to 1960, when the present opera house on Karl-Marx-Platz (now Augustusplatz) was opened.
When I was there they were advertising one of my favorite light operas, Martha by Friedrich von Flotow, which I have seen in Darmstadt and Detmold but not yet in Leipzig.
The address is Dreilindenstraße 30. Take the tram number 3, 7, 8, 13 or 15 and get off at "Straßenbahnhof Angerbrücke".
Update: For most of the year 2007, until November 11, Dreilinden is again serving as a substitute opera venue while the main opera house is being modernized and repaired.
Art Nouveau ambience
by german_eagle about Cafe Riquet-Haus
Cafe Riquet enjoys an excellent reputation as a coffeehouse. It looks back on long tradition. The ambience is nice, with Art Nouveau decoration on the ground floor.
The staff was a little inattentive, just average. We were a bit unlucky that the ordered cake was not available anymore. My tea was fair, but not worth a recommendation. They serve a lot of different sorts of coffee, and I also heard that "Schwarzwälder" tart was delicious.
'Museum der Runden Ecke'...

'Museum der Runden Ecke' (museum of the Round corner): IIRC it was the main buliding for the Stasi´s activity: now it´s turned into a museum where you can see films and look at old documents of that time... Quite interesting.
The museum of the runde ecke...
by Cdn-in-Leipz
The museum of the runde ecke (round square). A former headquarters of the Stasi, the East German secret police. Was a focal point of the protests during the revolution and the storming of the building led to the discovery of thousands of files revealing who was spying on who. This included neighbours, relatives, friends and even couples spying on one another and led to a great deal of social problems. The former citizens of the GDR have the right to see their own files but the sheer number of files means a delay of several years between requesting your file and receiving it. It will probably be ca. 15 years before all of the files are processed. The present museum details the operational techniques of the Stasi and contains many of the instruments used in their work.
