Christmas Concerts at St Thomas Kirch

by Jmark

I shall be in Leipzig over Christmas and would like to attend the Christmas Motet (24th) and the carols (20-22th) at St Thomas Kirch. Does one need to buy tickets ahead or is it like a typical church event open to everyone who gets there early enough?

If one just needs to be early, how early do we need to be?

If we need tickets, how do I order them?

Thank you.

Travel Tips for Leipzig

Art Nouveau (Jugendstil)

by german_eagle

Leipzig is heaven for Art Nouveau lovers. There are many excellent places with fine examples of this style in the old town. You cannot miss the Cafe Riquet (with the elephants), Speck's Hof Arcade or the facade of the house next to St. Thomas church (see picture).

Krematorium and Südfriedhof

by Kathrin_E

Leipzig’s largest cemetery is located in the southeast of the city behind Völkerschlachtdenkmal. It was planned in 1886 and the huge park-like cemetery has lots of old trees, graves of famous Leipzigers and old tombstones. The chapels and crematory in the centre form an impressive neo-Romanesque complex.

Regional trains

by Nemorino

A well-functioning railroad system needs not only the high-speed express lines between major cities, but also regional lines like this one to bring passengers in from the countryside. (The current management of the German Railway System needs to be reminded of this from time to time.)

I took this photo out the back window of a regional train when I was on my way from Hoyerswerda to Leipzig.

Museum im Stasi-Bunker

This museum gives you a very interesting overview on how the German Ministry of State Security worked. A lot of documents and photes give you an idea, how close people have been watched until a few years ago.

Goethe loved Leipzig!

by mindcrime

We walked a few meters to go behind Old City Hall where Naschmarkt is. There is a small cute building on its narrow north side. It is the Alte Handelsborse(Old Stock Exchange) that was built in 1687 in renaissance style with baroque elements. It was the place where merchants used to drew up contracts during the trade fairs. Although it was destroyed during World War II, it was reconstructed so we can admire it again. I didn’t go inside but I’ve read that the impressive hall on the 1st floor is today used for small events and concerts.

Just in front of Old Stock Exchange, a sculpture of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(1749-1832), the famous german writer and poet that studied law in Leipzig from 1765 to 1768.
