2 days enough for Leipzig?
by IceBear7
Hi everybody,
thinking about travel plans for the next months I came up with the idea to visit Leipzig. It would be around Easter time and I would have 2 days (1 night), Friday and Saturday. Friday being a holiday (Good Friday) with maybe a few things closed - would it be worthwhile driving there for two days? Is it enough to get an idea about the importance of that city with regard to history, music, literature etc?
Thanks for your help.

Hallo Steffi,

It feels like I'm eavesdropping on your travel plans. Sorry. Just have to say I wish some of the larger shows like Interpak and Domotechnica could take place in smaller, more charming towns like Leipzig. It would make for a nice change of pace!

Hallo Christian,

Travel Tips for Leipzig
How to wash your hands
by german_eagle
I found this funny instruction on "How to wash your hands" in the restroom at the Kiwara Marche restaurant in the Zoo. I've always thought I knew how to wash my hands properly but I could still learn something ... LOL
However, I am curious why it was only available in English ... do Leipzigers assume that Germans know how to wash their hands? Hm ... but then again ... there are the pictures on the leaflet. Maybe they assume that Germans are not able to read anyway? And that pictures are best for them? And, on the other hand, do they think that pictures are *not* enough for English speakers so they need a detailed instruction in words in addition?
Just kidding here, of course, but I thought it was hilarious, fact aside that I visited when the "Swine Flu" hit Germany hard ... ehem, according to the Pharmaceutical Industry. Good idea of the Zoo folks to advertise handwashing as best precaution instead of getting the flu shot.
Egyptian Museum
by aliante1981
There’s a touch of ancient in this modern German city. East of the Neues Rathaus there’s a fine Egyptian museum, exhibiting findings from 19th century excavations by archeologists from Leipzig University.

Student's meeting place
by german_eagle about Moritzbastei
Moritzbastei is where students meet. It is located in the cellars of the old fortifications of the city. The vaulted ceilings make a very special ambience. It is a typical student's place, cheap, smokey, cool athmosphere. The right place for talking (chatting) and meeting people. We just had a coffee there (caffe latte/cappuccino) which was very good.
St. Nicholas's Church
by antistar
The oldest church in Leipzig can be seen on the road from the station to the city center, and its sits on this busy street, squashed in by all the shops and restaurants around, and dominated by the giant communist office tower behind.
It was built in 1150, but has been renovated many times since, picking up on the way elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist architecture, to produce a very pleasant view.
If only it was easy to get a picture of it...
Stasi Museum
by antistar
I didn't manage to find the Stasi Museum, despite asking locals where it was. I think they confused my heavily accented "Stasi Museum" with the "Stadt Museum", although the directions I got could probably have taken me to either in the end. I should have taken my guide book or picked up a map.
The Stasi Museum is a unique look into the oppressive Secret Police force of the former East German nation, the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Ministery for State Security or Stasi for short). The Stasi were also unique in their monitoring of the East German citizens, with nearly 100,000 staff and 300,000 paid informants, there were approximately one informant for every 50 East Germans.
The Stasi kept a huge library of information on the people it monitored. When the files were opened up at the fall of the Berlin wall, they discovered an estimated 33 million pages of files written on East Germans and visitors to the country.
Many East Germans have sought to investigate these archives to find out exactly who had been spying on them during this time, and many were shocked to find close family friends, and even family members, had been reporting on them.
Questions and Answers
Q: Train Station Luggage Store "Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a place to store luggage in the station for upto 48 hours?
Thanks"
A: "Leipzig is a big station, so they will have that for sure.
Normally these boxes will take money for the first 24 hours and when you have them there for 48 hours you have..."
