Re: leipzig in December

Hi Bruce,
yes, the Gewandhausorchester is playing during that periode. For example the "Großes Konzert" (=big concert) is performed on Dec 4th and 5th.
For more details click here: http://www.gewandhaus.de/

The Christmas Market, one of the biggest in Germany, opened today (Nov 25) and you should not miss to visit it. Highlights are the world's largest Advent calendar, the Finnish Market, the historical Christmas Market and the iceskating course. Do not miss to drink a glass of Glühwein (spiced hot red wine).

You should go to the Tourist Information (in front of the main station) to get more infos on all events in town.

by Leipzig

When the sun is shining you have to make a trip by gondola. It looks like in Venice, Italy! Channels flow along the EXPO 2000-area, parks and forests. Also possible to discover Leipzig by rawboat or canoe.

Gourmet?

by german_eagle about Stadtpfeiffer

I stumbled upon this restaurant by chance when I attended a concert at the Gewandhaus a year ago. Later I read some excellent reviews so I thought I'd give it a try this time.

We were a bit late and in a hurry right before the concert that evening. They serve a special on concert days (see their website) - three courses for 38 Euro for which we opted. They served an amuse geule right after we had taken our seats. Then we had a pumpkin soup with ravioli, afterward beef filet goulash with mushrooms, small potato dumplings (my mom's are better) and a spinach (?) or so dumpling. Dessert was the best, a delicate cream-sorbet-caramel creation.

Including 0.2 l very good white wine, mineral water and coffee the check was 61 Euro per person.

Far better than Disney - The Christmas Market

by sourbugger

Tourism to Germany has received a huge boost in recent years with the growing popularity of Christmas Markets.

The one in Leipzig is perhaps one of the oldest (back to the 18th Century) and certainly one of the largest.

The nearly 300 stalls are very well presented in pretty wooden structures with candles and other trimmings added.

The goods on sale ranged from wooden toys and puzzles, to clothes, candles, and more Stollens (a large cake / bread thing) than you could shake a stick at.

It may feel that it is so perfectly put together (and somewhat twee) that it must be the creation of the Disney Corp (German division) but it actually comes across as very authentic.

Highly recommended. Nice Tree.

New City Hall (Neues Rathaus)

This vaguely Medieval-looking New City Hall was built from 1899 to 1905 in a style known for obvious reasons as "historicism".

It is basically a large office building, and is used to this day for the offices of the Leipzig city administration.

The building suffered some damage during the Second World War, but was completely repaired by 1949.
