Leipzig Tourist Information
by mindcrime
The Tourist Information of Leipzig is very helpful. First of all its location, right opposite the main train station will make your plans easier because they will give you a free map and all the basic info about sights, transportation, city walks, the tourist bus (the bus starts from there I think) etc
I noticed several leaflets about main sights and city events and the friendly staff informed me about the Leipzig card too that you can buy there anyway and use it for transportation too (free travel on all trams and buses). If you are a student you will have the same discount like having the Leipzig Card so it’s not worth buying it.
Although we stayed 2 days we bought the one for 3 days and we saved more than 15euro just for the monuments.
There are different Leipzig Cards depending the days you want:
1day(1adult) 8.90euro
3 day(1adult) 18.50euro
3 days(2adults+3children!) 34euro
The Tourist Office is open Mon-Fri 09.30-18.00 (saturdays till 16.00, Sundays till 15.00)

1 FC Lokomotive Leipzig

Noticed there was a game before we left home and it proved too tempting for me. Lokomotive Leipzig were regular competitors in European games pre 1989 and the name was familiar to me, so currently in the Sachsenliga and making their way back to the big time?
Enjoyed the game against Dynamo Dresden II (another name from the past?) with a 2-1 home win in the impressive Zentralstadion, built for the 2006 world cup.

Leipzig is 2h autobahn (or train) away from Berlin, 5h from Munich, 5h from Hamburg
there is to open a direct flight from Gatwick to Altenburg (ryanair) from next year
Altenburg is 30 miles away, good train connection
excellent food late at night
by german_eagle about Restaurant OpernCafe
In winter 2009 I attended the premiere of the ballet "Giselle" at the Leipzig opera house with American friends. Afterward we were hungry but it was late and we didn't have the energy left to wander around searching for a restaurant. So we dropped into the OpernCafe right in the opera house. It turned out to be a very good decision. Of course they are prepared to serve food after the opera or ballet late at night.
The decor of the restaurant is modern, but not 'cold'. Service was very attentive and quick. Prices are reasonable. I cannot exactly recall what we had. I believe I had sliced veal au gratin on salad and a glass of orange juice (driver), of the others someone definitely had ragout fin, someone else wild rice with pork and white wine. Everything was excellent.

The gewandhaus is the concert house which is very very nice and spectacular. The orchestra travels often so you really have to hit it lucky to get in..I hit it lucky by one night and was stuck with organ music the second night...Highly recommend a visit
acoustics..every seat is a good seat
