Travel Tips for Leipzig
why Leipzig?
by islander1000
why would one want to spend time in Leipzig? after all, what is all the noise about?
right. music. Bach, Gewandhaus.
for me it is the only german city I really like. just the right size, 500000 people, so it is not overcrowded and not deserted either. Also you still feel the East, though the East more and more vanishes and Leipzig becomes like any other city, just right now, there is still the generation grown up in DDR times making the social rules and that means, people are looking still after each other
I like the local accent (which most germans have difficulties understanding). It is a softish (if thats possible in german) sing along reminding on french (when you really concentrate and give way to some imagination)
in summer there are many cafes in the streets, there is a mild continental climate, it reminds on Italy listening in Gewandhaus to orchestra, when Kurt Masur conducted Beethovens 9th symphonie.
Deutsches Kleingaertnermuseum
by nepalgoods
Kleingaerten or Schreber Gardens are a special Germany hobby. Many people living in big town houses like to have a garden. So about 150 years ago a Mr Schreber had the idea to create areas around the cities, where people can have a small garden and grow their veggies there. The city kids could this way spend some time in fresh air..
Today you can find this kind a small gardens everywhere in Germany. If you want to know a bit more about Kleingaerten then you can visit the small gardens museum in Leipzig.
You can reach the museum from Leipzig Trainstation with tram no 3, 4, 8 or 13
Bicycle station
by Nemorino
Leipzig is one of those fortunate cities, like Aschaffenburg, Darmstadt and Gera, which has a bicycle station right at the main railroad station.
Here you can leave your bike for safe (and dry) keeping while you go off on the train somewhere, and you can also have it repaired, or you can rent or buy a bike here.
Thomanerchor
by Cdn-in-Leipz
The Thomanerchor is the boys choir of the Thomas Church and has a tradition dating back several hundred years. Its most famous conductor was Johann Sebastian Bach who is now buried in the Thomas Church. On Saturdays at 15:00 the choir gives a one hour concert in the church accompanied by the Gewandhaus orchestra conducted by Bach's current successor, Georg Christoph Biller. It is quite a bargain as admission is only 2 German Marks (about 90 US cents).
Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas church)
by german_eagle
St. Nicholas is Leipzig's biggest church. The western front is clearly Romanesque style, built in 12th century. The three naves, choir and chapels were rebuilt in Gothic style from 14th to 16th centuries.
Very special is the interior: redesigned 1784 - 97 by Carl Dauthe in Classical style, the pillars in palm tree like shape are unique.
When I visited the church was still undergoing a restoration inside, but it seemed to be almost completed.
Since Oct 9 1989 the church became world-famous, when the prayers for peace (since 1982) finally turned into a mass demonstration, which initiated the change in East Germany.
Questions and Answers
Q: Train Station Luggage Store "Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a place to store luggage in the station for upto 48 hours?
Thanks"
A: "Leipzig is a big station, so they will have that for sure.
Normally these boxes will take money for the first 24 hours and when you have them there for 48 hours you have..."
