Fastest route from Leipzig to Dresden

by mesa177

Hi, could someone please help me find the shortest and fastest way to travel from Leipzig to Dresden, preferably early in the morning (about 6 am) using a bus or train only? Thank in advance for your help :)

Buses are no option because so far there are no bus connections between cities in Germany.

But trains are very frequent and fast. Look up the link provided in the previous post.

Semi-correction, Bernd_L: There is a bus called "Autobahnexpress" between Leipzig and Dresden. However, the bus doesn't operate from Leipzig city centre, only from the airport and from Leipzig Fair. See this link:
http://www.autobahnexpress.de/fahrplan/fahrplan-ab-31-oktober-2009/

Won't help in this case, though. Train is the way to go for the OP.

yes, airport-buses are the exception. But the current german government is planning to change that old law that protects Deutsche Bahn from competition of bus lines. Maybe regular bus service between german cities will be possible soon.

Travel Tips for Leipzig

Central Leipzig.

by mwe

Willi-Brandt-Platz is about as central as you can get. There are two hotels: Continental to the right of the station as you look at it (or on the left of this picture) and Stadt Leipzig opposite the station: or off to the right of the picture (hotel names may have changed since 1994).

From here you can get buses and trams, as well as trains. The city's main shops are just a short walk away.

The main shops close on Saturday afternoons and Sundays, BUT the many and varied shops in the large railway station concourse remain open all weekend.

World Cup 2006

by Carino

Leipzig was a host city during World Cup 2006 and has one of the most beautiful stadium of Germany. Leipzig's Zentralstadion is rather small compared to the others, but the architecture and the location is great. The stadium is now used by FC Sachsen Leipzig, playing in the Oberliga.

Getting there by train

by Leipzig

By train you enter Leipzig at the largest terminal station and one of the largest passenger stations in Europe with 26 platforms (picture). Taxis, bicycle and rental cars are available at the station too.
Highlight are the sublevels with over 140 stores, restaurants and cafés.

Zum Coffe Baum

by Leipzig

This building was built in 1500 and houses a coffee house since 1695.
Inside you can see a museum of the history of coffee - very interesting! Have a cup of coffee at world's oldest coffee house like Gellert, Goethe, Gottsched, Lessing, List, Napoleon, Wagner, Wieck and Schumann before.

Old City Hall: Leipzig's...

by Cdn-in-Leipz

Old City Hall: Leipzig's Renaissance City hall. Contains a museum of city history which possesses the original of the only confirmed painting of Bach produced in his lifetime. Also contains interesting information regarding the public executions that previously took place in the market in front of the city hall. The most famous execution was that of Woyzeck later made famous by the Büchner play and the opera of Alban Berg.
