Leipzig has a lot of cute old trams from communist times, and a few more modern ones. The older ones are stuffy and hot as hell during the summer, but look great pootling around the city. There's no underground system, but there are a few S-Bahn trains to outlying areas. The system is quiet expensive, with day tickets priced at 4.90. When you consider that you'll find most of what is interesting in the city within walking distance of the station, it doesn't sound like such a bargain.
If you want to do some hardcore sight seeing, and have a few places outside the center you want to see, it might be worth picking up a Leipzig Card for 7.90 for an entire day of travelling on the metro, plus discounts of up to 50% on many museums and restaurants.
