Packing List

Leipzig is located in the northern part of Germany. During winter, the average temperature is around 2-3C. Make sure you have proper clothes, shoes for snow. Cream is also important because it's dry in Leipzig, especially after the shower.

Like on vacation in Africa
by german_eagle about Marche in the Zoo
When in the zoo and hungry I highly recommend to have a meal at the Kiwara Marche restaurant (not the Marche near the entrance). I am a fan of that Swiss restaurant chain (Mövenpick) because they really offer excellent food, freshly prepared, often organic stuff. This "Kiwara" restaurant in the zoo was particularly nice because it is located in a lodge-type building with a porch above the "African savannah" area of the zoo. You can get your food inside (self-service) and take a table on the porch, overlooking the zebras and springboks. I was just done with the breakfast buffet at the Westin so my hunger was *very* limited ... there's always room for a hot chocolate in my stomach, though :-) Delicious ...

While looking at JSB please move a little bit your eyes on the right (move also your feet please).
There is a building there, nothing special probably, but with these nice & super-shining golden tops !
Augustusplatz
by mindcrime
Augustusplatz is a modern huge square, not impressive on first sight but with some interesting buildings around, many of them showing you the progress of the architecture in the city during the 20th century.
Here you can see and visit the Opera House (pic 1), located at the north side of the square. It opened in 1960 upon the ruins of the New Theatre that was damaged during World War II. It houses interesting operas and ballets but I didn’t have time to see any. The capacity is about 1500 seats.
On the south side of Augustusplatz located the Leipzig Gewandhaus (pic 2). It opened on 1981 with a capacity of 1900 seats and actually this is the third home of Gewandhaus Orchestra. There is also a small hall with 500 seats. It supposed to have excellent acoustic and the Gewandhaus Orchestra (that formed in 1743) is very popular (with tours around etc) but as I told you I preferred to see AC/DC somewhere else in the city :) The Gewandhaus holds over 600 events each year
In front of Gewandhaus lies the neo-Baroque Mende Fountain (pic 3). It was built in the square in 1886 by the german sculptor Jacob Ungerer (1840-1920) and it’s designed after Bernini’s fountain on Piaza Novona in Rome. It is named after Marianne Pauline Mende, a merchant’s widow that donated it. I don’t think there is anything else from that century in this square. The fountain has many see figures and it’s a tribute to water and Greek mythology. Its high is 18meters.
On the top of Krochhochhaus (pic 4) you can see and probably hear a bell! It was built in 1928 by the jewish banker Hans Kroch(1887-1970), actually this was the first tower block in Leipzig. Just under the bell and the two figures is written the phrase "omnia vincit labor" which means “hard work conquers all”.
Finally, I saw and visit the City Hochhaus(pic 5). It is the former University Tower of Leipzig and located right of the Opera House. Because of its weird shape (like an open book) it’s called by locals “Wisdom Tooth”(Weisheitszahn). It is the tallest building in Leipzig (142 meters) with 34 floors, opened in 1975 but the recent years sold to a private company. MDR sign (can be seen to Top) is Miiteldeutscher Rundfunk(Middle Germany Radio) a big radio/TV corporation. There is a cozy café/restaurant on the 29th floor but also an observation deck on the top floor. We had breakfast on the café, the view was nice so we didn’t go further up.
