Travel Tips for Meißen
try the wine too
by richiecdisc
Meissen plays a central role in the wine production from the rich grape growing areas that surround it. If you would like to try some stop by the Sachische Winzergenossenschaft (Saxon Cooperative of Winegrowers). Here, you can sample a large variety of types of wine for free though it's normal to buy some when you are finished. The prices are the same as in the shops and at least you can have a nip before you buy something you might not like. The one we went to was called Kufertheke and was at Markt 5.
Schloss Moritzburg
by richiecdisc
This Baroque palace was built in 1723 and was the former hunting lodge of the Wettiners. The gardens and setting of the "lodge" is perhaps even more impressive than the building itself. Just a short drive from Meissen.
Albrechtsburg
by Kathrin_E
Meißen's castle was founded in 929 by Emperor Heinrich I. The rock next to the river had strategic importance and became the military centre in the wars agains the Slavic tribes of the upper Elbe region, and then in their Christianization. Meißen became the seat of a bishop in 968. Since 1125 the Margraviate of Meißen was property of the family of Wettin, who later became Electors and Kings of Saxony. Meißen was their first residence. The surrounding town developed soon after.
When the Elector moved to Dresden Meißen lost its significance. Good luck for architecture fans, because the castle remained in its late medieval state and was not modernized in renaissance or baroque sense. The late gothic castle is a gem of medieval architecture. Unfortunately it is temporarily closed for restoration. It will reopen in May 2010 with a big exhibition on porcelaine. 2010 is the 300th anniversary of the founding of Meißen manufacture right here inside the castle.
Frauenkirche
by german_eagle
The Frauenkirche (church of our lady) was built in Gothic style in the late 15th century. A fine work of art is the altar.
Have a look at the stained glass windows as well (see my travelogue).
The views from the tower are breathtaking! A definite must do!!

Heinrichsplatz
by german_eagle
Heinrichsplatz is a small square in the old town with charming atmosphere. It is surrounded by beautiful Renaissance and Baroque houses.
The Heinrichsbrunnen (fountain) was built by Georg Hermann Nicolai in 1863. Its figure shows King Heinrich I. who founded the castle on the hill above Meissen.
The former church of the Franciscan convent on the southern side dominates the square. It is now home for the town's museum. The convent was founded in 1258, the church as you see it today was dedicated in 1457.
