Travel Tips for Meißen

and eat it too...

by richiecdisc

We went up to the hilltop cathedral and a place right across from it had a sign outside saying they had beer goulash with a beer for five dollars. Even though it was the most touristy part of town, we decided to investigate it. It was certainly cozy enough and busy with locals having their lunches. We ordered our food and I noticed quite a few beers in their menu from the local brewery. An unexceptional Pils came with the meal but I tried an excellent dunkles and a quite interesting amber beer too. The goulash was great and a perfect compliment to the brews. But the real surprise was a "German Porter." It was actually written in English as befit the style of beer. Again, this was a surprisingly good and authentic interpretation of the style and a great topper to a fantastic lunch. There was a table of people enjoying quite a few types of local Meissen wines and I noted that they had a quite good range of wines on offer too. We left after a relaxing two-hour meal feeling lucky that the fancy wine restaurant had been closed. We had found a great place on our own and even though looking for wine, I found some excellent and different beers. On the way out of town, we stopped at a specialty wine shop and bought two bottles of Meissen's specialty white wine to bring home. We had had our cake, but we were going to eat it too.

Frauenkirche

by tini58de

The Church of our Lady dates back to 1205, when it was first mentioned. The gothic church as it is still today was built in the 15th century and the tower was added in 1549, after a fire had destroyed the original tower.

In 1929 (the year of the Meissen Millenium) the first playable china bells in the world were installed inside the tower.

Throughout the day you can listen to 6 different songs:

6.30 h - "Wachet auf, ruft und die Stimme"
8.30 h - "Großer Gott, wir loben Dich"
11.30 h - "Die Himmel rühmen des ewigen Ehr"
14.30 h - "Wir treten zum Beten"
17.30 h - "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott"
20.30 h - "Lobet den Herrn"

If you decide to climb the tower (very recommendable), you will see those 37 china bells on your way up. It is 42 meters up = 193 steps!

The view from the tower is spectacular and worth every single step you took!

Church of Our Lady

by Leipzig

This church was erected between 1447 and 1500. Since then a lot of additional work has enlarged the church. In 1929, the 1000th year of Meißen's foundation, world's first glockenspiel of procelain was installed. It should be a must to hear the bells ringing. All 37 bells ring daily following plays:
06.30 h - "Wachet auf, ruft und die Stimme"
08.30 h - "Großer Gott, wir loben Dich"
11.30 h - "Die Himmel rühmen des ewigen Ehr"
14.30 h - "Wir treten zum Beten"
17.30 h - "Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott"
20.30 h - "Lobet den Herrn"

Markt

by german_eagle

The Market square breathes medieval atmosphere. It is surrounded by well preserved (partly Neo-) Renaissance houses, the late Gothic town hall and the late gothic Frauenkirche church.

The town hall was built 1471/81. Another important house is the "Bennohaus" No. 9, a Renaissance house built approx. 1600. Romanesque and Gothic remains of the previous buildings are preserved. You should at least have a look at the beautiful portal and the vaulted Gothic ceiling in the entrance hall.
