Just ask!

We parked our car (for free after 1800 hrs) and walked into a shop to ask for the area with restaurants.
We walked that way, made a wrong turn and asked again. A nice man was just closing off his mens wear shop and told us we'd have plenty of choice around the market place (Altstadt) and named Spanish and Greek restaurants.
No, no, we told him. We want proper German food! So he pointed us to Ratsherrenstuben, a traditional old place that we would certainly like.
And so we set off to find this place which turned out to be quite easy.
Christmas Market

Pirna’s Christmas market takes place in market square around the town hall, thus in the Canaletto view. The setting among the historical buildings is pleasant.
The market is not very big, admittedly. I did quite some shopping there, though, especially at the one stall that had Erzgebirge woodcarvings of excellent quality from renowned workshops. I also got a pretty pendant fro a necklace from a stall with glass ornaments, and an assortment of Saxon sausages. The quality of the Glühwein is better not mentioned, though.
A recent acquisition, first time in 2010, is the “artisans’ market” which is actually one large wooden hut which serves as show workshop for a handful of artisans, where you can watch them at work. I had expected more.
The evenings were surprisingly quiet. If you want an uncrowded market on a Friday or Saturday evening, here it is. Merchants told me that in previous years the market used to close at 6 p.m. Now it stays open until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, until 8 p.m. on all other days, but the people of Pirna have not yet realized or accepted the longer opening hours.

It is the entrance of the Canalettohaus with the Tourist-information, where you may also see a copy of the famous painting of Pirna made by Canaletto !

the old sunscale on the townhall

You will see this great sunscale on top of the entrance of the townhall of Pirna.
The 2 lions are part of the coat of arms of Pirna and you will see them also in other decorations on the townhall.
Take a walk around the townhall and take a closer look at the various great gates and windows !
