Shock your parents
Here by the opera house, as in other places in Halle, the public library had set up placards in the summer of 2009 with the text:
Shock your parents -- read a book.

You can't miss the Tourist Information office, in this newly renovated red building at the west end of the Market Square.
They have a large selection of maps and folders about Halle, and they also organize guided walking tours and boat trips on the Saale River.
And they can help you find a hotel room if you don't already have one.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6: 00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I also like to look out for the remaining of the former GDR days. I knew the GDR era from former visits and so it´s quite interesting to see what is changed and what isn´t.....
You will find signs of the past in every corner of the city!
I had a small contract to work in Halle which I can greatfully announce is finished!
Halle is in the eastern part of Germany which used to be in the former GDR.
Like the rest of the GDR, a few cosmetic changes were done to modernise the country from West German money, before that Halle was pretty run down. The main square , MARKT is quite pretty and has a baroque feeling to it but outside there are many buildings which are rotting and dilapidated. Broken glass and litter is scattered everywhere.. One can still get a sense of what life in teh former GDR might have been. People´s character is still greatly scarred and they are very unaccessible and difficult to get to know. If one is looking for kind and hospitable people this is DEFINATELY NOT the place to go!
Halle Neustadt, the new town, looks like the perfect communist theme park, and was famous for being the perfect communist city!
PERFECT COMMUNIST THEME PARK FEELING
