Walking from the station to the Solitaire Hotel

First of all, leave the station by the side exit, not the front.

Then try to find the street in the first photo. It has a name, Kirchnerstraße, but no street sign, so you might have to ask somebody.

Turn left into Kirchnerstraße and walk one block to the notorious Pedestrian Prevention Bridge, which I have ranted about in one of my Transportation tips. Lug your suitcase up the crumbling cement stairs, over the bridge and down the other side.

Turn right onto Merseburger Straße and then left at the first corner onto Phillip-Müller-Straße. There is no sidewalk here, so you'll have to take your chances walking along the edge of the street. Then turn left and cut through the parking lot of the supermarket, which will put you onto a street called Turmstraße.

Walk two blocks along Turmstraße and then turn right into Streiberstraße. The hotel is in the middle of the second block.

Solitaire Hotel

This is an apartment hotel, meaning that for a very reasonable price you get not only a bedroom, but also a hallway, a small living room and a small kitchen. I paid 40 Euros for one of these (single occupancy) with breakfast included.

The most impressive feature of the hotel is the building itself, which dates from the late 19th or early 20th century and has been lovingly renovated, particularly the façade (first and second photos) and the inner courtyard (third photo).

The building is even more impressive when you compare it to some of the empty crumbling derelict buildings in the same street.
