Excellent organic food
by christine.j about Alte Canzley
In Wittenberg we found one of the best restaurants of our entire trip, the Alte Canzley. The building is very old, from 1391, so the name Alte - Old is justified. It's a certified organic restaurant and the food is just wonderful.
We had dinner there each day, beef in a black-beer crust, spinache rolls with pasta, orange-ginger soup to name just a few dishes. They served a very interesting dessert, asparagus ice-cream. I had never had that before. It was not sweet, but very refreshing and really tasted of asparagus.
We usually paid about 30 Euro for a complete meal for two, including beer and after dinner coffee, really not bad for an organic restaurant.
A beautiful, old yard
by christine.j about Brauhaus
We had been told about the Brauhaus in Wittenberg, the brewery. It is a hotel, a brewery and a restaurant, situated in a very nice old yard.
Since we had discovered the restaurant Alte Canzley we knew we wouldn't want to eat at the Brauhaus, but we went and had a beer in the yard. It's an old yard, and the buildings around it used to be students' dorms. The narrow, white tower especially looked very nice against the blue sky.
On one of the walls you can see a statue of Prince Elector Johann Frederic the Generous. It is thought to have been sculped by someone from the Cranach workshop, not necessarily by the master himself.
