Elbe River
by Kathrin_E
By the time it reaches Magdeburg the Elbe has grown into a big river. The surrounding countryside is flat and the landscape is not spectacular at all – to be honest, this is not the prettiest river promenade in the world. The river belongs to the city, though. It has been an arteria of traffic and trade for a millennium, connecting Magdeburg with the North Sea and with Bohemia and the Ore Mountains.
The best view on the Elbe is from the promenade at Fürstenwall.
Magdeburg's most famous panoramic view with the cathedral toweing over the river bank can be taken from the next bridge south of the old town or from the opposite river bank.
My family lives in...

My family lives in Schoenhausen - between Magdeburg & Rathenow/Berlin, situated at the River Elbe.
My father loves to go fishing there and our dog Abbey shares his passion for fishing rods - as you can see :)
PS: As my dear friend Steve so fittingly remaked: this area is also a very good place for bird waching - just make sure you keep your dog close to you ( if he isn't so lovely trained as our Abbey ;o)
Domplatz
by Kathrin_E
The wide square in front of the Dom always feels a bit deserted, apart from the tour buses and groups stopping to visit the church. In the pavement the foundations of the first church are marked.
Along two sides there are baroque buildings that have been restored already in DDR times. They are occupied by the government of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt. The largest building closest to the Dom is the Staatskanzlei, the seat of the prime minister. Others host ministries.
The ugly Plattenbau block that once filled the side towards Breiter Weg has disappeared and been substituted by modern office and shop buildings.
Hundertwasserhaus
by Mariajoy
I was thrilled and delighted to discover that one of my favourite artists - Hundertwasser (1928-2000) - had his last work built here in Magdeburg. It is very easy to find as it is close to the Cathedral. At a cost to build of 27.1million Euro, it contains 55 apartments, a hotel and a kindergarten.
This is definitely well worth seeing - Hundertwasser didn't believe in straight lines - either in his paintings or his buildings and with a 33m spiral tower , the bright pink "Grüne Zitadelle" is just stunning.
Magdeburg - Pearl of the Romanesque Road

"Not all Post-War Communist Housing Developments!"
Celebrating its 1200 year anniversary, Magdeburg, the capital and a highlight of Sachsen Anhalt on the river Elbe is a lively, modern and vibrant East German city with a fascinating history from Otto the Great to Otto von Guericke. Approaching the centre, on the outskirts you will see plenty of post-war Stalinist style architecture but things are changing and the most recent exciting development is the newly built Hundertwasserhaus, Die Gruene Zitadelle in Dom Platz.
Some of the information regarding the churches of Magdeburg was provided by my VT friend Nemorino Thanks Don!
