Burg Wanzleben: There's so much history here!
This beautiful historic fortress dating from 860 has been restored into a superior hotel situated in the tiny village of Wanzleben in the East German flat lands of Sachsen Anhalt. It was our accomodation for weekend wedding festivities. My brother organised this hotel for over 20 wedding guests and I felt really priviledged to stay here. The accomodation is in a word ..*luxurious*. Many of the old outer buildings of the castle have been renovated over the years - and there is still some work to do on others within the grounds. The staff are highly trained and extremely professional. It was a unique and memorable experience to stay here and I would recommend it to anyone travelling in the area.
Below the Burg lies a park with large lake and mature deciduous trees - just right for a little stroll after breakfast!
As for value for money - it really can't be beaten, with a double room in the castle at 110E per night - the prices are just excellent. I don't know of anywhere in the UK where this kind of quality would be on offer for that price.
The website gives the history of the fortress in great detail and it is well worth checking it out... but here is what they say about it's recent past:
The Castle Wanzleben is used by many different agencies of
the Communist East Germany. The local LPG, the agricultural
production association, a kindergarten, an old people's home,
a credit institute and a factory making ice cream (and,
conveniently, a dentist) all find a roof within the castle walls
over the years. There is, however, no money to maintain and
repair the old buildings and the castle turns into a desolate ruin.
On December 14 Dr. FRIEDRICH-WILHELM KÜHNE, son of
CLAUS JOACHIM KÜHNE, buys the Castle Wanzleben and
begins the long and difficult restoration process.
In October 2003 the Restaurant "Philipp August" opened its
doors in the newly renovated "Pferdestall". The Pferdestall also
houses 16 of the now 30 hotelrooms and suites, as well as
the Lobby - Bar"
