What city/area of Germany is best for Christmas?

by thegyp62

I am planning to go to Germany for the Christmas Holiday. However, I do not know what city/area would be the best for what I am looking for. I would like to go where they have the best Christmas Celebration. Any advise would really help me out.
Thanks
Susan

I think it depends on what you want for a holiday. For "old style," I'd go to something along the Romantic Road or Fairytale Road. For modern day german xmas, I'd stick to the major cities. Personally, Berlin was my favorite during our recent trip. However, Munich is very pretty, and the northern towns are lovely as well. Do a few searches to look for traditional festivals.

That idea is something my mother has wanted to do for a long time. She grew up near Koln, but she wants to do Bavaria for the holidays.

When planning your trip keep in mind that the Christmas markets end before Christmas, usually the 23rd December is the last day.Christmas itself is a very private affair in Germany, just family and friends.

Bilder Galerie

This is towards the entrance of the Sanssouci park and displays the quaintness that has remained in this great Brandenburg town. Be sure to check out the small cafe's that line these alleyways. There is reminents of old Italian architectural style.

Neptune Fountain

by freddie18

If you are in Berlin, spend few minutes visiting this statue. When exiting the nearby Underground train station, you may be able to see a very old Gothic redbrick, Marienkirche.
At the centre of the park across the Marienkirche, a Neptunbrunnen or the Neptune Fountain is definitely an amazing scene. Just by looking at the bronze statue is entertaining and attractive in any angle with Neptune on top holding his trident. You will see Neptune in the photo I posted here with one of the four female symbolic nymphs. All of the four femaile statues were sitting on four sides of the fountain.

Neue Synagoge.

by euzkadi

Built in 1859 by E. Koblauch in arab-bizantine style, was severely damaged during the Crystal night (when hundreds of jewish shops and synagoges were destroyed), and completely destroyed by a fire in 1943. In 1995 was reconstructed, and now holds the Centrum Judaicum. It´s located in the Oranienburger strabe, now a very trendy street, full of cafés and restaurants.

Visit the Berliner Dom

by listenandlearn

Berliner Dom is the Protestant cathedral which has the sarcophagi with over 90 members in the Hohenzollern reign.
The planner or per say the designer of Berlin Dom was Julius Raschodorff and it was finished in the year 1905. The dom is 74-m-high which is supported by pilars of sandstone and decorated with mosaics by Antonio von Werner. Unfornately the Berliner Dom was terribly damage on World War II and it was restoration about the year 1974.
