Aldi's
by Jason3
I first encoutered Aldi's at home. It was a new idea of low, low prices and you bag your own groceries (the bag costs 15 cent). I was shocked and amazed to see Aldi's in Berlin. I was told that 2 brothers started the store in Berlin and then it expanded. I just didn't consider that a discount grocery store would be international.
Neue Palais fascade
by bpwillet
The palace is crowned with numerous gods and demigods looking down from the balustrade, who were supposed to symbolise Prussia's lustre and glory.
The King used the palace as living quarters for himself and his guests; the royal family used it as a summer residence right into the 20th century.
Holocaust Memorial
by rkearns
The Holocaust Memorial is a site dedicated to the murdered Jews in the holocaust. This is an erie place because you are standing on what appears to be solid ground, with these rectangular and trapezoid shapes all around you; but you are actually standing on the crest of a small hill, one of many that make up the topography of this memorial. One could also describe it as an art installation. Whether you feel you are standing on the Empire State Building, or being surrounded by gravestones, each person has his own interpretation. Maybe the artist intended this site's meaning, beyond, the obvious memorial, to remain mysterious.
The New Jewish Museum
by Markyreid
designed by Daniel Libeskind, the architect who won the competition to design the 'new' twin towers in NYC, designed this museum. Its silver jagged form is a representation of the smashed start of David and it is laden with symbolism and philosophical themes. THe guides at the museum will fill you in on these as you enter the museum. It contains extensive material on Jewish history, not just world war II. You will need to allow 2-3 hours to do it fully.
it cost 5 euros each and 2.50 for students.
