Cell Phone Recommendations - Europe

by mspetter

Hey -
Will be in Germany for three months. Any recommendations for international calling? My U.S. cell phone plan is a small fortune. I'll be moving through different countries and making calls in Europe and the U.S. Thanks for your help, as always! :-)

IF your phone is a GSM-system-phone AND IF that phone is tri/quad band (the European frequencies differ from those in the USA) AND IF that phone is SIM-UNLOCKED, you have several options:

Buy a pre-pay SIM card in every country you're passing through
OR
Buy a pre-pay SIM card in the first European country and use roaming.

It depends how long you're staying in a country/how many calls you'll make and where to. Personally I would opt for the first option.

I also highly recommend option 1. When I go to Germany I take my unlocked GSM phone with me and buy a SIM card when I land (usually T-Mobile). I think O2 and Vodafone are available also, but I've always had good service with T-Mobile (T-Punkt in Germany).
If you don't have an unlocked GSM phone you can can buy a basic used model on Ebay for $25-50. I recommend Motorola or LG. Be sure it operates at GSM 1800 Mhz for European use.
Here is an excellent GSM SIM Tutorial.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Free Tours

by dgines

I subscribe to many different magazines and this one is a tip from National Geographic Traveler:

Free Ride Sandeman's New Europe tours offer free (well, guides accept tips) walking and biking tours of Amsterdam and Berlin. English speaking guides joke, dish out advice, and tell historical anecdotes all along the way.

Berliner Dom

by freddie18

You can see in the photos, the Berlin Cathedral or the Berliner Dom. It was built in ten years time between 1895 & 1905.

You will be able to visit the Berliner Dom as it is open everyday. You will experience the very interesting interior decoration which is unique most especially the magnificent Sauer's Organ and the stained glass designs.

If you want to experience and see the interior of the Berliner Dom, guided tours will be available on site.

Reichstag

by bpwillet

This beautiful building has gone through many changes. As the seat of the German Parliment, it has been involved in many monumental changes as Germany has passed different hands. The German Republic was announced here in the early 1900's, fire gutted most of the inside out in the 1930's and required extensive rennovations. It is where the Nazi government began to rise to power. And graffiti can still be seen inside from soldiers stationed here in the Second World War. There is a cafe on the top floor with stunning views. Mke a reservation for the cafe, the lines can be extremely long and it will get you inside quicker.

Brandenburg Tor

by bpwillet

The area where Berlin was split in two. Also one of the most recognizable monuments of the city. Built in 1791 as a Neo-Classical arch and gateway. Equipped with a statue of the Goddess of Victory on top. It is the entrance for the Under denLinden street.
