Gaarden: Kleine Istanbul (The Turkish District)
by Dirim
In Kiel, about 8300 Turks are living and most of them lives in Gaarden.
Gaarden is known as the immigrant densed district in Kiel. In 1919, it was one of the cities of "worker's uprising" which was suppressed in a bloody way.
Gaarden is located just behind the shipyard HDW and it was-has been workers' district. Since the basic source of labor is immigrants now, unsurprisingly the district attracts immigrant population.
15% of Gaarden's population is Turkish, but in fact it is reckoned as "Turkish" district, which is for me a bit "xenophobic" degfinition.

"Intro"
I moved here in early 2006. After I graduated from school in 2005 I finally decided to move to the Baltic Sea to study Scandinavien languages and literature at the University of Kiel.
Kiel is the largest city in the state of Schleswig Holstein which is the northernmost in Germany. Furthermore it's capital city of the state with the parliament situated at the waterfront. There is a university which was founded in the 17th century and several institutes on business and economics. Kiel is famous for its IFM Geomar institute with renowend professors doing research on the sector of Marine Biology and Oceanography.
On the first sight the city is not very interesting but if you have a closer look you will find a wide range of beautiful places to spend the afternoons. You can walk down the Kiellinie which is a waterfront walk at the Kiel Fjord and take a seat in front of the parliament to watch ships passing by or whatever. Furthermore there are a lot of parks where you can relax. In summer the beach is of course the place to go. You will find a lot of them surrounding the Kiel Fjord.
"Transportation"
Kiel is very well connected to the world. There are daily ferry connections to Oslo in Norway and Göteborg in Sweden. Furthermore there is a small airport which is currently not used by public airlines unfortunately. Hamburg, the second largest city of Germany is just 90km south of Kiel. There is an hourly bus transfer to Hamburg airport from which you can reach a lot of places in Europe and even some overseas. Furthermore Kiel is connected to Hamburg by a highway and hourly train services. Kiel is also connected to the 90km north Denmark by daily trains.
