Travel Tips for Kiel

Don't forget your swimming suits

by Mumin

The summers can be really hot in Kiel. More than 30C in July and August is to be expected. Therefor you should not forget your bathing suits. There are a lot of beaches surrounding the Kiel fjord. I prefer the one which is called Falckenstein on the west coast of the fjord to be reached by bus 502 and of course by car.
There are several beaches along the Fjord where you have to pay taxes, most of them on the east coast. All beaches inside the city areal of Kiel are free. On Falckenstein beach it is allowed to have a barbecue so you can spend the whole day at the beach .

This is the lock leading into...

This is the lock leading into the Baltic Sea. The difference in sea-level is not really a lot, but nevertheless it takes about 30 minutes for the ship to slowly enter the lock, that is not very much wider than the ship itself !

Kiel

"Some information about..."

Kiel, the capital of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, was founded by Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg. In 1233, he built his 'Holstenstadt tom Kyle' - today's Kiel - on the peninsula of an arm of the Firth. In 1242, it was established as a city.

A significant boost to the city came with the university, which was founded in 1665 and named after Duke Christian Albrecht.

Kiel had developed into a major city with more than 100,000 inhabitants at the end of the 19th century. By 1918, the population has swollen to 300,000 before falling dramatically thereafter.

Now, Kiel is Schleswig-Holstein's leading service and educational centre, with about 240,000 inhabitants.

The picture was borrowed from the official website of Kiel where You could read more about Kiel.
