Travel Tips for Schleswig
A glimpse of Schleswig
by evaanna
We visited Schleswig on our way back from Scandinavia. We parked the car near the town square, where people were enjoying a lazy afternoon in the street cafe and saw an imposing church in the distance so made our way in that direction. We walked along the narrow street with some timber-framed houses that opened onto the church spires. The church, a cathedral, was open so we were able to go inside.
Later, we tried to find an ATM as we had no German money on us, having just crossed the Danish border, and it was before the time of the EURO. We asked some people the way, but had problems communicating. The only person who spoke English didn't know where an ATM was and told us to go to the centre as it would probably be there. We were walking back to the car when suddenly my husband saw a sign for it - we were just passing it but it was inside a building in the town square so hard to notice. Interestingly, the door to the room with the ATM was blocked if there was someone inside, so you could only enter it if there was no one there. Great idea to protect the customers!
Such was our first glimpse of Germany, only a glimpse as we had to drive on to be back in Poland on the following day.
Schleswig

"Some information about..."
Schleswig is one of the oldest cities of the Baltic region, with the settlement of Sliesthorp being mentioned in Frankish imperial records as early as 804 (it has 1200 years old history!). The settlement on the Schlei, also known as Haithabu, became a flourishing commercial metropolis in the Viking era.
The legendary Haithabu was destroyed in a raid in 1066, but the new city of Schleswig grew up on the opposite bank of the Schlei. Schleswig carried on the role of Haithabu as a commericial metropolis and port until the 13th century.
If You need more information about Schleswig (for example how do the city celebrate ist 1200-years-old jubilee), then visit the official website of Schleswig.
