need help re: taxis

by sfe

My daughter will be traveling in Europe and will arrive at the Schleswig train station on a weekend night. She was told to catch a taxi there to take her to her hostel location. Where are the taxi's located? What are the tipping customs? Is it safe for her to be riding in one alone? Are taxi's available at all times or does she have to call for one. And she speaks only a little German.. will someone there be able to help her?
Thanks for your response because right now I am one anxious mom!!!!

no need to worry about safety.
north germany is very cheap and most taxi drivers will speak at least a bit of english.

no need to tip a taxi driver in northern europe, but rounding up a bit will be apprieciated.

i don't know that town too well, but the norm is that there is a taxi stand right outside the train station.

Typically in front of the station. And according to the homepage of the city there are taxis.
With 4 km the distance from the railway station to the city center is unusually wide. Good business for the taxis. So there will be mostlikey a few around if a train arrives.

> What are the tipping customs?
You don't have to tip. Rounding up to the next 0,50 Euro step for this short distance would be common (e.g. from EUR 5,60 to 6,00). But only if the service was OK.

> Is it safe for her to be riding in one alone?
Sometimes taxi drivers are assaulted by their passengers. Never heard of anything in the opposite direction. The taxi business is highly regulated in Germany. Alone to try to rip off a customer would be in a rather small place like Schleswig a kind of commercial suicide for the taxi driver/owner.

> And she speaks only a little German.. will someone there be able to help her?
"youth hostel" or "Jugendherberge" will be sufficient - there is only one in Schleswig.
The problems only start if someone speaks neither German nor English.

Coming from the UK, Germany seems to be an incredible safe country, especially outside the big cities. Where I live in Coburg, Bavaria, crime seems to be nearly non-existent compared to the similar sized town I came from in the UK, at least in terms of obvious in your face crime, like muggings. Also, according to international surveys, Germany consistently comes up as one of the safest places in the world. In a recent Mercer survey even Frankfurt, considered by many to be Germany's most dangerous city, ranked as the 8th safest city in the world.

You should always be careful, but there's no need to overly fret :).

Travel Tips for Schleswig

"Schleswig" a Seaside Town on the Baltic

by ranger49

""Schleswig" - A charming place to relax in."

We spent a night here after spending a week with friends in Hamburg. It had been a busy time and we needed a break from travelling before continuing our journey to Denmark.
Schleswig was the perfect place to unwind - with more things to see and do than we had time for on such a short visit.

Next time we hope to visit Schloss Gottorf and Museum and nearby Haithabu, site of an original Viking Settlement and the Wikinger Museum.

On this visit we caught up on our sleep and enjoyed just wandering about the old town before visiting amazing Dom - St Peter's Cathedral.

"A place for sailors"

The River Schlei is a very popular with sailors and there is a small Marina next the the hotel we stayed in.

We collected lots of tourist leaflets before we left the town and as I read about all the things there are to do there I wished we were staying for a week or more.
