The Elbe Marshes Near Uetersen
This is how the land between the dyke and the river looks like. I can't help it, there's a peculiar beauty to it, and the afternoon light in wintertime just adds to it. Don't you agree?

The original pic. There are both paved paths before and behind the dyke, well suitable for bicyling and rollerblading. These are mighty dykes built in the aftermath of the catastrophic storm surge flood in 1962.
The only thing not so nice is the *** from all the sheep grazing around the dykes.

Winter can be wonderful
There are many small harbours and moorings along the river. Human activity definitely has deeply influenced the landscape, but there is still lots of nature, and I just love these wide open spaces!
The defense system against the floods consists not only of dykes but also of many watchtowers, radar towers surveilling the ship traffic, and many flood gates wherever a tributary river empties into the Elbe.
