The Saale Valley has always attracted kings and dukes to built their lodges and castles here. Still today you can see numerous castles along the river which meanders from Franconia to Saxony-Anhalt.
The river has formed terraces and steep cliffs over the past 10,000 years. Long cycle routes and hiking tracks can be found here. Here you have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Goethe and Schiller, who loved to spend their holidays here.
The rivers Saale and Unstrut (Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt) mark Germany's northernmost wine-growing region. Due to the Gulf Stream the region has a warm climate although it has the same latitude then Irkutsk, Russia or Winnipeg, Canada.
Beer production was first mentioned in Apolda in 1440. Today's Vereinsbrauerei was founded in 1887. You find the brewery just under the castle hill in the center of town.
You can actually visit the brewery every Tuesday at 2 pm or by arrangement for groups. The cost is Euro 10.00 for the around 2 hour tour and includes 2 glasses of fresh beer, a pretzel and a souvenir glass. Groups of more than 15 people need to phone ahead.
