Sommergewinn
by mondfrau
Eisenach is famous for its spring festival "Sommergewinn". It is celebrated every year 3 weeks before easter. The procession starts in Eisenach West at 2pm and makes it's way to the market square where the mayor receives them. Frau Sunna (the sun - female in German) and the winter argue on the market square, with Winter loosing and a symbolic straw man being burned. There is a fun fair and many houses are prettily decorated along the route.
Thueringer Landestheater
by globetrott
Thueringer Landestheater was built in 1879 according to the plans by the architect Karl Weichardt and it was a donation by Baron Julius von Eichel-Streiber. I did not see any performance there, I simply passed by it, when I took a walk in the evening. You can click on the link below in order to find the Thueringer Landestheater on the townmap of Eisenach as #9.

Bahnhof Eisenach : a beautiful trainstation
by globetrott
In 1847 Eisenach was connected with the trainsystem of Thueringen and the Hauptbahnhof dates back to the end of the 19th century, beautifully decorated with colorful art-nouveau windows and some nice decorations on the facade, see my 2nd and 3rd photographs !
Hauptbahnhof is about 500 meters from Karlsplatz, click on my link below and you will see it on the townmap of Eisenach.
Festsaal was the inspiration for Ludwig II
by globetrott
These are some more of the most important highlights of the guided tour through the Wartburg :
1)Der Festsaal der Wartburg is the large hall at the top of the old Palas of Wartburg and after a visit of "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria in Wartburg, he ordered his architects to build exactely this same hall also into his castle of Neuschwanstein. It is a pity, that during the guided tour through the Wartburg you may just stand in the back of this hall and take your pics from a quite large distance, but at least you are allowed to take pics (againsts a small fee of 1 euro), unlike Neuschwanstein, where photography is strictely forbidden !
The Festsaal is still used for performances, "Tannhaeuser oder der Saengerkrieg auf der Wartburg" is the most popular,
2)In Landgrafenzimmer you may see a series of great frescos by Moritz von Schwind about ledgends about how the Wartburg orignated and glorious events in the history of the noble owners of the Wartburg.
3)Der Saengersaal / the hall of the singers shows a giant fresco by Moritz von Schwind - see my main picture ! Singers and poets were quite popular at the court in the beginning of the 13th century, some of them travelling from one palace to the next one and a competition between different singers might have happened as well. This is how the story of the Saengerkrieg of Tannhaeuser orignated, although the looser of such a competition was certainly not killed like in the popular opera by Richard Wagner.
4)Lutherstube / Luther's Room is that small room of Wartburg, where Martin Luther stayed between may 4th 1521 and march 1st 1522 under the synonyme "Junker Joerg". It was his living- and workingroom, where he wrote the so-called Wartburg-papers (Wartburg-Postille) and translated the New Testament. Still today the Wartburg-library holds 45o writings by Luther.
The room was not changed a lot since that time, but unfortunately millions of tourists have left their traces over the centuries...
5)Various woodcarvings made by Tilman Riemenschneider and paintings by Lucas von Cranach dem Aelteren are the highlights of the museum in Wartburg castle. Many of these works of art are well known and shown in the historybooks, but I had no idea, I may see the originals in the Wartburg.

One of the things I want to do next time I am in Eisenach is to go to the Reuter-Wagner Museum, which is said to have the second largest Richard Wagner exhibition in the world -- the largest being at his former home "Wahnfried" in Bayreuth.
