Travel Tips for Erfurt

Architecture in the city

by m-joy

This picture was taken in the Johannisstraße - one of the streets with some beautiful old houses in many different styles and colours. Just walk around and enjoy the familiar atmosphere and nice houses.

Schauspielhaus (Playhouse)

by Nemorino

This playhouse was used for many years by the city theater as its main venue for spoken drama. It now appears to be empty, and there has been some controversy of late about whether or not it should be torn down.

An alternative theater group called "Initiative Neues Schauspiel Erfurt" would like to take it over, but they have not (yet?) been able to convince the city council that this would be a good idea.

Severikirche

by alancollins

Severikirche stands next to Mariendom and it is a five naved early Gothic church hall. The church dates mainly from the late 13th to early 14th century. The church contains the sarcophagus of St Severus whose remains were brought to Erfurt in 836, a Madonna from 1345 and a 15m high baptismal font from 1467.

Kunsthalle

by elgin99

Directly on Fish Market in center of town and in front of town hall is that hose of art, inside of the "Hauses zum m Roten Ochsen". That building is an famous historical one.
Klassical and modern Art!

Beer holes in the houses

by christine.j

On some of the old houses in Erfurt you see holes above the doors, about 20 cm in diameter. They are called beer holes, because they were made to show passer-bys when the beer was brewed and ready to drink. If you've read my tip about the woad, you know that the woad traders needed lots of urine. One way to make sure you have enough of this valuable liquid is to drink lots of beer. So the woad traders also started a beer brewing business. They took turns and to indicate which brewery is ready to serve beer, they stuck straw into these beer holes.

Q: ERFURT OR WEIMAR "I have 2 nights to stay in either Erfurt or Weimar in the middle of June, en route to Frankfurt, which one would anyone suggest..."

A: "Erfurt. It's got a beautiful centre, is larger than Weimar and there's lots to see. Weimar is also nice, but it's an easy trip from Erfurt and perfectly doable in a day..."
