Peterberg Citadel by alancollins
The Petersberg Citadel is one of the few, almost completely preserved Baroque citadels in Europe. The first foundation stone was laid on 1st June 1695 when Erfurt was ruled by the Electors of Mainz. The citadel was built on the site of a former Benedictine Monastery. After extensive renovation in the 1990?s most of the citadel can be visited including guided tours of the underground passageways that are organized by the local tourist office. The tour takes 2 hours, costs 6 euros and starts from the tourist office at Benediktsplatz 1, April - Oct: Thu - Sun 2pm & Nov - March: Sat 2pm. There are wonderful views of the City of Erfurt from the battlements of the Citadel.
