Travel Tips for Erfurt

Zum Breiten Herd - one of Europe's finest facades

by iandsmith

When I was there in 2007, this building was suffering from the scaffold disease. Blanked out from the rest of the world, it promised much when it would finally be revealed in its glory. How lucky for me that I was able to return in 2008 and discover for myself just how wonderful this restoration has been.
There, resplendent in the Fischmarkt where it has plenty of opposition for glory, the fresh paint sparkles in the morning sun showing off more colours than has a rainbow.
It's a truly wonderful thing to see buildings like this restored. Although it will serve to attract many thousands more tourists, sometimes that isn't necessarily a bad thing. At least their money has made it live again.
I took the night shot from the vantage point of Fellini's restaurant across the other side of the square, whose first floor offers the best view of all, not to mention having sensational food as well.

Fish Market and Town Hall

by elgin99

The neo-Gothic town hall on Fischmarkt was built between 1870 and 1874. Inside is a series of murals depicting legends, scenes from Luther's life and images from Erfurt's history.

Official description: " The Fischmarkt is located at the historical intersection where the "via regia" (the Royal Road) met the old north-south trading route. Besides the town-hall, there are several beautiful Renaissance houses in the same area such as the "Haus zum roten Ochsen" (1562) and the "Haus zum Breiten Herd" (1584) as well as a statue of St. Martin dressed in the attire of a Roman soldier. The statue was nicknamed "Roland" by the people of Erfurt."

Petersberg Citadel

by christine.j

The citadel is not only interesting in its underground passages, but also from the outside. You can walk around and enjoy the view. There are canons standing around and you can still see the many look-outs. The citadel was never conquered.
The draw bridge has been turned into a cobble stoned street now, but you can still see the main gate with the spiked fence coming out of the ceiling. Next to the drawbridge there is a small door. This was used for latecomers, so that they soldiers didn't have to let the bridge down for just one person. When you look up inside the main gate, you can see holes in the ceiling. From there unwelcome people were covered with hot water. Not a very friendly way to get rid of unwelcome guests.

Erfurt Christmas Market

by christine.j

The Christmas Market is held in front of the cathedral, this year (2006) for the 156th time.
At the entrance there is a huge Christmas pyramid, which on five "floors" shows Christmas scenes and people who have been important to the history of the city.
Apart from the usual vendors you can watch how the glass ornaments are being blown.
There are also more rides than on other markets, including some rides for adults.
When I was there many children were attending the fairytale wood, an area in which they could see scenes from the Grimms' fairytales.

A: "Erfurt. It's got a beautiful centre, is larger than Weimar and there's lots to see. Weimar is also nice, but it's an easy trip from Erfurt and perfectly doable in a day..."
